In high school, I use to talk to myself quite a bit, especially when other students noticed me. Whenever a student noticed me, he/she would ask me "who are you talking to ?" I would get a little irritated, and say "nobody, all right?!" One time, I was driving behind my Dad back to our home, and I ended up talking to myself, and Dad rung the phone, and said "Hey, quit talking to yourself," and I said "I wasn't," and he says "Yes, you were, I could see you from my mirror."

So here are a couple of questions:

When you talk to yourself, do you tend to get asked by someone "who are you talking to?"
and when you are caught, do you try to deny it even though it is obvious everyone saw it?

My son does this alot. Normally he will reply with 'nobody' or one of his teddies. I hope it gets better as he gets older, I don't want him teased or bullied over it.

A: Myself.

I talk to myself all the time. I try to say that I'm thinking through work items at work (which I usually am). At home I don't care, the only issue is when I sometimes talk/mumble/mouth things when I'm walking. Mixed with the fact I usually look downwards slightly and have a strange gait, it makes a lot of people give me the "omg, don't get to close: phyco" look. Everyone who knows me has learned to live with it and stop asking and I really could care less what everyone else thinks.

When you don't fit in with anybody else that's like your last resort.

Normally I do only talk in my head, but in certain situations (such as a major public area) I end up talking out loud. I'm not normally picked up on it though, although the gesture thing is a problem :P

My son talks to himself, especially when he's playing video or computer games. He used to have to read out loud -- couldn't read quietly in his head.

My question is --

Why DO you talk to yourselves? What need does it fill?

I only talk to myself in the dead of night, when I know for sure I won't get interrupted. When I was a little kid, I talked to myself irregardless of whether of not anybody else was around, including public places.

Not unless its a stranger

Never got noticed for talking to myself. Do think to myself constantly over stuff. Random stuff.

Used to "crash" at a friend's every day after school, would wake up and would get some questions on what the hell I was on about. Apparently I'm more social when I'm asleep then when I'm awake...

It feeds a deep human need for some sort of communication. Even the communication impaired need it to some extent I think.
Also it just helps us organize how we're thinking.

I talk to myself all the time. I also have an imaginary friend which adds a whole different level.

Well I tend to try and not talk to myself in public, but I don't know if they notice that I am. At a sleep over I whent to I found out I am very talkative while I am asleep, even having conversations, one problem no filter of things that are not good to say to others. I feel like talking to myself organises my thoughts, it can also fill a bit of a social void.
