There are a few certian words that make me cringe. One of the words is Reality. The other words are very derogitory and they have something to do with Disabilities. I don't wish to mention them on this site, but I'll give you some letters that they start with, such as R, H, I and S.

Actually, I'm more inclined to like certain words (to which list I've just added "derogitory"; what a lovely word!)

I tend to like words like
defenestrate -- unusually specific meaning
ekslernejestrino (/esper./ "a former female principal of the school") -- interesting morphology
archfarchnad (/welsh/ "supermarket") -- yes, phonation is what attracts me
etc.

P.S. Added derogatory to the list of my favourite words.

I have some word I hates but they're in swedish and translated I have nothing against them. I don't know what makes me hate these words, its just how they feel in my mouth. I even changed my name cause I hated saying it

That's one I'd never seen, but yes it has a lovely sound, but I was referring to Cockney Rebel's spelling "derogitory"; that single letter change transforms the sound...

But CR, weren't you reffering more to the connotations of certain words, rather than how they sound? I no longer have any regard for what others think of me, so no, there are no such labels which offend me (but then no one calls me a "ret*d"..."strange", maybe, or even "weird", but it'd be a brave or foolhardy person who would venture that I'm mentally deficient!)

Thanks Ilster, this is a fantastic word, although I had to look in three dictionaries to find out what it means. I think it can be very useful when talking to a lazy child: "If you don't clean this pigsty, I will do it myself by means of defenestration!". Compliance certainly guaranteed. :D
Edit: I did not notice that the primary credit should go to Kofeinik. Apologies and thanks!

Katshakai, with the thing about your name, do you ge tthe same with other peoples names? I hate saying peoples names, I just loathe it, I prefer to just say something with not mentioning a name, but I dont know why. Does anyone else have a kind of names phobia?

Words I love -
teufel
meow
tintinabulation
dodecahedron

Words I hate -
harold
razed

Exactly the same thing here. It is extremely difficult for me to address an unfamiliar person by name. I always phrase sentences in such a way that saying names becomes unnecessary.

Surprisingly, I have another oddity as far as names are concerned. I tend to call my family members by first names, and I call my grandfather by middle(!) name. I never called my parents "dad" or "mom", always by name. And within our family it sounds informal. Moreover, very soon all the other family members also cought this habit from me; and now everyone calls my grandfather by his middle name etc. In the last two years, however, I learned to call parents "father" and "mother" (in Russian, of course).

Also, sometimes (but not always) I tend to address my very close friends by first and middle name in plural form (very polite form in Russian language), and again, they also learned this habit from me with time and addressing each other in such a formal way became a sign of an informal conversation in our circles.

Very interesting, I try to avoid the name usage, or try to use an alternative that I find suitable, as you describe, for instance using Mr. then the persons name, even though this might seem very formal, at least I am then able to cope with saying the name.

i use people's names more often than most people do - a counselling "device". probably irritates the hell out of everyone.

words i hate tend to be bastardisations of engilsh - prioritise, burglarise, specialty (i'm cringing as i write).

words i love:
dodecahedral (almost snap, Amy!)
concatenation
perspicacious
irridescent
gnadige (german)
hayir (turkish)
halwa (gujerati)

omg, i'm not sure i can stop....

Wow, I have the same problem. Sometimes this is difficult for me, because if you want to get someone's attention, "hey you," is usually not appropriate. "Excuse me" usually works ok, as long as they're already looking in your direction.

Why do you think you have a hard time addressing someone by name? I know that my worst trouble is with teachers, I never know if I should call them by their first name, Mr. or Ms., last name, or professor, or what, and that's why I avoid it with them. With other people, I'm not sure what the trouble is.
