I'm sorry if this has been gone over too much before.

I was by no means late in developing verbal communication, nor reading. But for the life of me, I can't spell worth crap. Even words I know I've known in the past, simple words, often when it comes down to putting them on paper, or screen, they just don't come out right.

Am I alone in this? Somehow I doubt it. It seems like it would be a fairly common aspie problem.

Why would it be common? Frankly, I have ALSO sometimes had problems with some words I shouldn't have had a problem with. Still, on some posts, or letters, I have spell-checked them to find not a single misspelled word! I have seen MANY NTs that have done far WORSE!

I could very well be wrong about the commonality of it. Or the aspie specificness. I just kind of expected remnants of language issues in some aspies with it being an autism spectrum thing.

I don't mean to offend, if indeed that's what happened. Most of the time there's no filter between brain and mouth, or keyboard. I tend to blurt things out when they cross my mind, without always giving them further processing.

It just has always seemed odd to me that I can remember numbers, and even random alpha numeric strings so well, and still can't seem to spell. Maybe there's another issue and work and I'm incorrectly attributing it to the AS.

I can't spelll for beans. I love to write and consider myself a decent writer, but spelling drags me down.

There's only been one misspelled word in this thread, and it's one that was perfectly understandable to miss.

I don't see any problem, vt420. Your writing is quite lucid.

It's not a completely constant issue, and also I have firefox's built in spellchecker enabled. Sometimes I word my way around using a word I can't seem to spell, like probably gives me fits without spellcheck, so I often use most likely instead.

It really stands out when I write by hand. That is when anyone can ready my awful handwriting.

I'm an extremely good speller, and always have been.

So if poor spelling is an aspie trait, that's one that missed me.

I was classed as "delayed" in learning in early primary school in relation to reading/writing (I had the whole speech delay thingy as a young child too), and I'm ok with spelling if the first time I saw the word I'm spelling was spelt correctly to begin with. Otherwise, I'll make the same mistake over and over again, no matter how many times I recognize said error.

(For the most part, my writing is based on rote-memory, which is probably "normal" for everyone, but everything I say, I'll say it the same way each time the trigger of said writing is initiated.)
