Knowing your exact diagnosis

Or

Just knowing that there is a reason as to why you are different, and that you are not the only one

What is more important?

Knowing the diagnosis... If people don't believe me or say I'm faking it, I can produce proof

I didn't know for sure that there was a reason for me being different UNTIL I knew my diagnosis. They went hand in hand for me.

Right now one of the most important things to me is to truly find out and get a diagnosis.

Knowing there's a reason, and that there are other people going through the same thing.

Knowing the diagnosis because it contains also knowing the reason - you are diagnosed with X so it's obvious there must be others like you - if people exhibiting traits of X didn't exist, coining a name for X couldn't take place.

Knowing that there are others out there to relate to.

What difference will it make if they DO know ?

I doubt they'll make any meaningful allowances.
And even if they do, you'll be lumped in with 'ret*ds' and treated accordingly.

I try to fit in rather than standing out even more.
Only my very closest know that I'm a spectrumite.

I think those for whom a diagnosis is important, need it for THEMSELVES - almost as though they can't believe they have it unless it's in writing.

Just knowing why I'm different and that I'm not alone. That way, I can celebrate my differences.

OK.
But you'd be just the same without it.

Yes you would but what is wrong with getting a professional opinion? I'm no doctor if you are, it is good to have your own suspicions backed up by someone who has a lot of experience with hundreds of different cases.

If you are so supremely confident in your own self diagnosis don't go it's that simple.

Understanding what's going on is the most important to me, regardless of what word the medical profession chooses to put on it. Understanding the traits is useful without knowing the word 'autism', but the word 'autism' is not useful without understanding the traits.
