Does anyone find that this can be INTENSELY irritating based on the habits of those standing in any proximity to you ?

Some things that force me to move becaues I can't be around them : -

- Perfume
- Loud talking
- Swaying back and forth
- Unpleasant voices or accents
- Fidgets
- Children who won't stop wandering around

More generally, my position has to be pretty 'right' too.
Irritants include : -

- Glaring fluorescent lights
- Cold air from A/C blowers
- Irritating bastards (Oh, did I already mention that ?) ;)

Yes, often just being around too many people will get to me.

I hate having air being blown on me that is not set by me. My car heater controls I can stand because I can control those. But air conditioning with air being blown on you as you enter makes me move around the air flow. I hate the cold section being the first section in supermarkets or produce section - depending how you look at it.

I hate seeing anything flickering it gets my blood boiling. Sometimes it's a "I never noticed until you pointed that out to me!"
"It's been doing that for ages!"
"Really, never noticed"

The worst part is people who think they'll get there sooner if they squeeze together.
I can't control the personal space behind me, so I give myself a lot of room in front.
Like that time -- climbing the Statue of Liberty (when it was open) a teen-age girl kept her nose in my azz the WHOLE way. I put my knee on the step so that the bottom of my foot kept her away. So she pressed against the bottom of my shoe. Some people just can't control themselves.

Now that I think of it, I should have just let one rip, right in her face.

Based on their habits? Not really. All those things are irritating. However, the real irritation is just their proximity. All that stinking perfume and annoying grating noise is just the bitter icing on the cake of the fact that I want about three times as much 'personal space' as most human beings, and find casual touch, expecially from strangers, abhorrant.

The little kids wandering around thing is a big one. Though it doesn't matter if they're kids or adults. If I am in a crowd that is waiting quietly and forming a queue, I'm much more comfortable than when in a crowd where everybody's milling around. This drives me crazy and I must back against a wall or something so that there's at least one side of me where there are not a bunch of people moving around.

Yesterday while I was writing a check for my groceries at the grocery store, a woman walked behind me and stood with her hand on my cart practically looking over my shoulder! When my "What the blazes do you think you're doing?" look didn't scare her off, I finally said "Ma'am do you mind?" in a really irritated tone of voice and she backed off. I understand that most NTs have a smaller sense of personal space than I do, but some people just go overboard.

All of it, but most particularly PERFUME! :x

That goes for cologne, too, and air "freshener", and all of those other poisonous things known in America as "fragrance".

What on earth are people thinking? It is one thing to smell clean, but what is the deal with spraying oneself all over with chemical approximations of "fruit" and "flowers", as if that toxic waste smells anything like those things. Bah!

The UK has begun banning a lot of the stuff because it is so toxic, and it triggers migraines and asthma in so many people, and Canada is well-known for fragrance-free policies, but the US is way too in love with the chemical industry to rock their big stinking boat.

Perfumes really get me. But what I hate the MOST is someone talking right behind me in an elevator or walking on the sidewalk. This can put me in an irritable mood for the rest of the day.

You should have called the police. He knew what he was doing.

I never would have thought of that. My sense of smell is nearly worthless, so it doesn't annoy me. But I can imagine it being a serious problem. Is this an issue in schools, or just office buildings?

My pet peeves:

Overly emotional country/western music blairing in my ears at restaurants makes me squirm.

Servers at restaurants wanting to talk too much. I realize I should talk to them but I just feel so anxious, I have no idea why this is. Part of me wishes that I could just talk to them without worrying. I start to feel this worry when I notice too much eye contact and over friendliness from them even though I know they are just being nice and doing their job, trying to earn a good tip. I feel terrible for this:(

A major pet peeve is being at a supercenter that is really crowded and everyone has a shopping cart and I can't go two feet or turn down an aisle without accidentally almost colliding with someone else's cart.

Being someplace with a bunch of bad breath. I must be really sensitive to breath odor because a lot of it smells so strong.

Being slobbered on by human or animal. I don't like saliva for some reason.

Low tolerance for boredom and likes to move around a lot. Because of this I don't like to arrive anywhere early unless I have to (too much waiting and I don't "wait" very well unless I have interesting reads or a crossword puzzle)

Doesn't like the feel of sweat.

Doesn't like to cry because it gives me a headache and makes my throat feel constricted.

Cannot eat tomato sauce because of allergies.

Is also allergic to dust so when I dust and it gets stirred up my skin is dry the next day, lips chapped and feels tight.

It's really difficult for me to complain in person or over the phone and I wish I were more assertive with people I don't know (has no problem with family.)

For those of us who get migraines, asthma and rashes, it is an issue everywhere we have to be near others and still breathe - work, school, movies, airplanes, etc.

It is actually a problem for a lot of Aspies. It seems we have either super-sniffers, or our noses are dead - I'm not sure which is worse.

It's also an issue for anyone with nasal allergies. I had an NT friend once who was very sensitive to scented stuff.

What I don't get is that the people spraying this stuff, usually NTs, don't understand that we all have to breathe the same air and some of us are harmed by scented sprays. Whatever happened to their famous empathy? :?
