First there was the astronaut who drove halfway across the country in some sort of an affair wearing a diaper, then someone making castor bean poison, then someone with a massive collection of child pornography, then it was someone who sat in for someone else to take a test, then it was someone embezzeling money and now some nut job who yanks out her baby's fingernails claiming it was autism or Asperger's Syndrome. I get so tired of these people who use the "Autism or Asperger's defense" then run to the papers and have the rest of us end up with egg in our faces.

I'm gonna guess there's 149 NT criminals for every autistic criminal.

I mean, seriously... nothing about autism affects morality. Same goes for the every other mental disorder (with the obvious exception of antisocial PD and possibly alcohol/drug addiction, depending on the person). Only exception I can see is that a cognitive/mental disorder can occasionally get so severe that it stops you from realizing what you're doing--but much more often, at that level, it simply stops you from having enough planning ability to commit a crime.

Crime rates for mental illness, not including addictions and antisocial PD: Same as the general population.

If somebody commits a crime and they have a mental illness, it gets splashed all over the headlines. Nobody says, "This criminal happened to be mentally ill"; they gravitate straight to "their disorder drove them to it".

It's like, if you have a diagnosis, people blame the diagnosis, when they should in many cases blame YOU! If you were capable of making the choice, and you knew it was a crime, then you are as responsible as the most typical neurotypical in the world...

if they were capable of doing it and knew it was wrong
then they should be sentenced like any other crook.

Agreed, its so easy to blame your actions on the "diagnosis"! And jeez, I am under the spectrum but I sure as hell know right from wrong, even my son at 4 knows! The problem is, these crazy freaks who commit these horrid crimes just never want to take responsibility for their actions.. so sure they are going to blame it on "something"... why not choose autism to blame it on? Or any other "syndrome" for that matter? It's not like they are going to come right out and say "I take full responsibility for what I did."

Yeah--if you haven't got the morals to keep from committing a serious crime, then you probably haven't got the morals not to blame it on your autism, even though it hurts other autistics.

Not to mention their lawyers are probably pushing them in that direction already.

Sometimes lawyers convince their clients to use their disability as a defense so they can get off easily; get a lighter sentence or easier sentence.

Funny story; none of those a-holes even remotely fit Aspergers, save some were a little antisocial! Still don't get how antisocial is assosciated with AS, most (though not me), desire socialization, but lack the capacity!
AS doesn't mean an organized asocial subconscious personality disorder!! So these bogan nuts should cut the crap out!! It's driving mental!! I might have to go out, kill someone, and claim "it were mah neurotypicaliness, yer honours, what done mades me do it, ah-hyuck!"

How the heck do we know they don't fit AS? The articles aren't going to mention their biography life. Just because it talked about the crime they did and it does not mention any of their symptoms, does not mean they don't have it. We don't even know enough about their life, we have only heard a few things and that was it.

What if I committed a crime and it ended up in the online articles and they mentioned my condition? You won't be seeing my AS in there because the article will never mention my symptoms, just the criminal behavior.

This last one is a computer hacker claiming Asperger's as a defense. These stories have been posted on WP including the CP one.

autistic people still know right from wrong.. just because they have it harder than other people doesn't give them the right to abolish the rules.. otherwise they should all live in hospitals, which we know not to be true.. therefore, suck it up and dont be a crook!
