I don't know, I think it has something to do with your lawyer. They have to file your case papers and then you have to get on the docket. I think it takes a while to go through the courts and that's the slow down.

Hm. Never heard of anyone getting on SSDI without a lawyer. Most of the time it's denied when someone goes through the social security administration then you have to get a lawyer to try for you.

It's part of the process. Helps weed out those that need it.

Sorry 'bout that, sweetie:( Everything I learned about SSDI I learned from my best friend who had to go on it because his mom drank and drugged while she was pregnant and it took him a while to get on it, he needed a lawyer and had a stay in a crisis center before he got the lawyer. When he was finally approved he had an accumulated amount that was something like three thousand dollars or more...It took him a while to get approved and unfortunately he was in jail while waiting:(

It takes a long time because the health care system in this country sucks major balls. My boss had to wait two or three years before his health care kicked in

It takes so long to get benefits because of the eligibility process. Most states are in trouble from in the 90's when they were handing out SSDI like crazy without making anyone do it based on need. Now, everyone has to suffer.

Just keep filing the appeals and do everything they tell you to do, go to all your appointments and make sure they send you to get assessments done. If you file an application with the Bureau of Developmental Disabilities and are approved to be on their waiting list for services, someone there will help you to get through the SSDI process a little faster. You really need to hook up with an adult service provider and have a case worker help you.

Another sure fire way to get these things done is to go through Vocational Rehabilitation. They will help you with the paperwork, too.

The government is always slow my dad says.

I do think the Social security system is messed up though. There are people out there who really do need it because they are unable to work do to a health issue and what happens, they get denied. Luckily my boyfriend's parents got approved.

if they deny me, i'll be royally screwed over. because my medicine is whats keeping me alive and without disability i won't be able to begin to afford it. As it is, my monthly medicine will cost more than 50% of what I can expect disability to give me each month and I have insurance 8O

I got it without a lawyer. I did all my own paperwork. It took six months, but they said that was unusually fast. I kept calling them and asking how they were coming along, especially the times I lost the jobs I was trying to keep in the meantime.

Well, it took all of six months to get benefits for me, but I have a physical disability that's pretty hard to miss.

Medicare takes two years, but isn't Medicaid an option? If you're American? I know requirements are different from state to state.

Also, for those on meds, check with the drug companies and see if they have a program to pay for meds for low income people. I had to do this (one of my drugs is 1600 dollars a month) until my full coverage kicked in. Usually it's a straightforward form (one page) to fill out, and the company usually requires financial proof (the letter with your disability award-I think for one company, they needed verification of yearly income as well).

I hope this is new info for some of you and you can use it.

Metta, Rjaye.

I'll have to re-apply soon as my coverage only lasts until whatever date my doctor said I'd be able to work again on (that varies greatly depending on which doctor they are referring to as I saw a ton before getting an accurate diagnosis) but I've got medicare for the moment.

I was initially denied in June when I first applied and July when the hospital required me to apply but the hospital paid an advocate to fight for me to get medicare (i owede them several thousand dollars and they knew they wouldn't get a penny from me because I couldn't afford it). So after my july denial she contacted the medicare office and worked out a deal where I would get medicare for july and august if I paid $68 on my hospital bill. Since I had a few thousand in bills other than the hosptial for that time period, it was a wise decision.

And its currently in effect today which I hadn't been expecting - I found out when I went to refill my medicine and told the pharmacist I might only be able to afford a 1 or 2 week supply. She looked things up to see how I could get it cheaper and then told me it would only be $3 because my medicare picked it up (thats the first I had even heard that the medicare approval went hrough, but the mail that day had my letter stating that)
