When you are messaging/PMing people via the internet how do you know when the conversation should end?

That's a darned good question. I just let it die out when I'm done, or if there's a bye and resulting bye. Some people just have to have the last word.

If I want the conversation to end, I will just say "anyway I am sorry to do this but I have to run, I have things to do, will catch up later." If they disappear for a while, then just close the conversation. If they ask later on "where did you go".. simply say to them "nothing was said for a while, I figured you had gotten busy with something and I had things to do".

They have to end? I've had one going on for weeks!

Sometimes the conversations just die. I assume that either then or when someone has to leave that it ends there.

I didn't realize there was some signal about a conversation needing to end online.

I have specific ways of ending...
I say "enjoy your day" "speak later" or for one person it's "good night" (in turkish) the to end an emoticon of a flower - then I wait for a response....

Sometimes when the conversation starts to die and the other person seems to be holding onto it with a kung fu grip due to boredom, i just say "Well buddy, i gotta jet", then i block them for a bit. There's nothing worse then someone holding onto a dying conversation.

lol I hate those situations. I just say "I'm sorry, my Mother is calling me downstairs for dinner/to help me with something/to go out" and then I say "got to go" and wait for them to reply, then I say "bye". Then the other person says "bye" and I type "*leaves*" and sign off.
