It's a big question, I know, but why?

I was overjoyed to find this site and I came here for quite awhile just to read and giggle - I was thrilled to discover there are more people out there that share the quirks that I have - WOW what a revelation in a life changing and very wonderful way!

(Thanks ALEX!!)

Then I started coming by for news... see what's new, respond a bit.... mostly read..

Then I became aware that I tend to come here when I'm feeling particularly Aspie and particularly misunderstood by the world. Sort of like the back of my closet when I was a kid - out of the whole internet I find myself crawling in here to read and say "Yeah... I know how you feel."

Sometimes I come here when I'm the most beaten up or the most beaten down and it's not entirely fair to this community, because when I'm up and the most functional and most productive, I don't come here! Doesn't that sort of rob the group of the majority of sane and helpful input I am capable of?

I don't want to just take, or be comforted by this site. I do want to help and contribute and work together so I am trying to be here more when I'm NOT beaten up by Them.

How about you?

To have something resembling a real social life. I work hard, and except for those rare instances when I'm sick, I rarely get any down time. I have lots of RL friends, but I know them mostly through work.

So here we all are ... where's the party?

That's my reason...
Am too introverted & agoraphobic to meet & greet people offline, though I'd like to-so this is how I try to make up for what I cannot manage to do-as I can at least attempt to participate online at a couple dx forums.

Was easier to socialize (or seem to, which is more than how it is for me now) when younger & in school-had no choice (and I loathed that) about leaving the house, but mostly because I was surrounded by others under circumstances in which conversation naturally occurred. Now that I'm adult, expectations have changed but I haven't changed suitably into "normal" adult.

Even here (at WP), I was very intimidated at first, esp. since I'd only been on internet for a year, shortly after being dx'd AS-these things were new to me all at once (talk about overloading on overwhelming level of "novelty" !).

Often, this site it is the closest thing to human interaction as I can get in my life.

Because I feel more at home here than I have at any other forum... and besides its nice to be accepted for who you are. I haven't gotten that from many other places. I also like learning new things about and from the other posters here. And this place is far more interesting than any other forum I have ever participated in.

I totally agree with both of your lines - the statement and your sig!

When I lose an obsession, I feel lost until I find another.

Personally, I rarely find comfort here. Usually if I have a problem and I post it I don't get the replies I'm looking for.

I come because sometimes I see people who are troubled and I think I have decent advice to offer. Plus I've met a few friends.

I like coming here because it feels safer to talk and not be judged to harshly, I also feel
like I am part of a community, which I have never experienced before in a positive way.

I come here for the social interaction and to learn more about AS. Also, this is the only place where I have ever felt like I belonged.

While I am here, I try to give back by sharing a lot of the stuff I've had to learn the hard way.

To know that there are other people like myself going through the same things. To see the similarities that we have and to get answers to my questions by people with the same thing I have.

Ditto.

Plus it's such a pleasure to not have to wear the mask, to be myself and still be similar to others.

Plus there are many independent thinkers here.

And no strict herd with a strict hierarchy of domination and a few primadonas and a clique. Rare thing to find.

To learn about Aspergers from the human perspective. I head read the papers and articles, and I was curious about what people with the syndrome have to say about it. I initially had no intention of registering, but there were so many interesting conversations going on (especially about math and science) that I couldn't resist. And so, I am now here as the resident NT. :)
