So I have been participating in an ASD fMRI study in DC. They predominantly take people who are diagnosed (duh) but they will also take undiagnosed people (like me) and interview you and give you an IQ test and such with a psychologist who evaluates you and if they think you fit the spectrum profile, they invite you back for behavioral testing and then the actual fMRI study.

So I've just finished with the behavioral testing and fMRI study yesterday cause they deemed me autistic! Got some cool pics of my brain which I'll post once I have them digitalized.

The coolest thing is that they're going to have the pyschologist write me up some sort of diagnosis so that I can use it for disability services at my school or wherever I would want to use it. I'm not too sure exactly what diagnosis they would give me. I can't imagine anything other than AS or maybe PDD-NOS... They may even just state in it that I am on the spectrum. But they're going to write up how my testing with them went and I'll let you guys know what they say specifically when I get the letter.

They also invited me to do another autism fMRI study that they are doing. So I'm going to be going back for more at some point.

I don't think I need the diagnosis for assistance really, but it's just such a load off my mind in so many ways. I've tried looking of professionals in my area unsuccessfully cause I couldn't afford any of them. These people doing the fMRI study were really really nice and very understanding for adults in my situation.

I've just been kind of happy all day :)

Just thought I'd share it with everyone on WP! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

What's the purpose of the study though? What are they hoping to find or prove through this procedure?

I'm glad to hear that, right now I'm looking for a professional who could help me get tested. I'm sure it feels great to be sure.

Brain scans/MRIs are cool, aren't they? I'm thinking of making some website wallpaper out of mine.

Yip dee doo!

I would say I'm not jealous, but that would be a lie. It is so incredibly hard to get functional work done when your really need it. I'm not talking about my ASD but some complex cognitive problems that are not particularly common in ASD. I know the Maudsley are doing to do so some scans, but I fear it is going to be yet more disappointment.

Basically I get participate in their research while getting treated...so long as it is not for me specifically. Not on my terms I’m not. Sorry to be selfish but f**k that.

Maybe I have to become a neurology student. I have a physics friend and his friends used to get high by sticking their head in a NMR machine at Oxford University.

I’ve had a couple of static scans. They picked up a benign cyst that was growing very slowly, so I had it operated. But they can’t tell me anything about my cognitive problems with static scans.

Don’t forget that you owe a debt of gratitude to people with head injuries and cognitive dysfunctions; they taught you more about how the brain works that some man the can remember what he did every day since 1950 or whatever. So if you think that sort of crap going to win you the noble prize like that dumb as s**t scientist did in that article not so long ago, you got another thing coming.

No, really I'm happy for Sedaka. I'm not going to plot your untimely demise  jk.

Cool. It's good to see that the long road led to your assumption being correct.

I'm betting you'll probably just have "ASD" written down; which is probably the best thing to have, really (I have "ASD" written down in my government folder, and I like that, as I know I have "Autism" of some kind).

it was a face recognition study. honestly, i've taken the ones posted on this site and they were nowhere near as hard as the ones in this study.

they've asked me back to participate in a a study that looks at what parts of the brain autistics use for learning and memory. i'm not too sure of the details yet.

Very cool! Congratulations!

I'd love to participate in some sort of fMRI study. Especially one that involved visual processing, as I'm sure I'd get some interesting results!

I had a brain MRI when I was younger (part of a battery of tests I had to go through when I was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency). It would be interesting to know if my brain looks the way an autistic brain is supposed to look... Whatever that is. The pictures are probably still on file in some office somewhere.

I had an MRI when I was 6 for pretty much the opposite reason- I was growing so fast they worried I might have a tumor on my pituitary gland. Hospitals are only required to keep those records for about 7 years though, I think, so I assume that my MRI is long gone.

I'd love to get my brain scanned to see what happens when I have tics, especially phantom and evening-up tics and compulsions.
