So many things about people seem mysterious and confusing to me, this is really no different--but I find the business of people showing their dark side in public totally baffling.

I mean all the stupid, offensive graffiti. Or the anonymous public comments on the internet.

What is wrong with people? Why does the chance to get away with scribbling obscenities and hateful remarks in some public place compel people to do it?

I don't have any inner drive to do anything like this. It is alien and incomprehensible to me. Do you understand it?

I've read reports that blamed the new world's coldness on the anonymity of the internet. Probably the rise of hate groups is testament to that. I wouldn't at all be surprised if you can link flash mobs and assault groups to the internet, specifically, YouTube.

Well, people have always done mean things to total strangers that I can remember, even before the internet. Not everybody did them or does them, but some people do.

When I was a teenager, people used to ride around and throw eggs at cars, or hit mailboxes with baseball bats or shoot mailboxes or run over peoples bags of garbage that they had put out by the curb. Strangers. For no reason other than to just stick it to somebody. I don't see the thrill in that. I guess some people feel that they get so much crap from the world that they want to give it back and a stranger they pick out is just a representation of 'the world" or maybe just reminds them of somebody that hurt them. Who knows?

I don't get it either, but it happens.

Yeah--I don't think the it's really to do with the internet, except that the internet has a lot of opportunities to do something where people might notice the result, but not catch you.

So I associate all the vile messages on the internet with the old stuff--nasty graffiti, poison pen letters, etc.

What makes a person with a sharpie scrawl something nasty about a gender, ethnicity, or individual? Why this need to spread pain and enmity?

It just seems like a very strange thing to do with your free time.

I've never understood that behaviour, either. I wouldn't do that stuff, and that leads me to wonder why those people actually do those things.

I do not do things like that.

I will only write insults on the internet to people who have been harassing, bullying or flaming and then only as a form of self defense and only after trying to reason with them first. I have a dark side, I don't like to use it.

People on the internet bully people and spread rumours about people that are not true.

They can be vicious online. Down right vicious.

Horrible vindictive souls they are.

I don't know what makes people attack for no reason. I only verbally attack if someone attacks me first and then only on the internet (in real life I either freeze or walk away). I can understand self defense but not wanting to hurt someone for the sake of it when they have done no harm to you.

Oh, I think some of these people might be ill or warped in some way as they seem to gang up on a singular person and attack them in packs. A pack attack.

A contact I have on facebook was a victim of a pack attack. I stepped into defend her at a time when everyone else was just watching on laughing and making comments like "ha ha get the popcorn" when this lady was clearly getting very upset over the vile things they were saying about her. This is why I am contacts with her. Every so often she sends me a care package to the UK and I send her some of my stitching back (she seems to like my cross stitch). We don't always speak much and she lives very far away (States) but she is a nice soul who didn't deserve the treatment they gave her (horrid creatures that they are).

They seem to see it as some form of social entertainment.

I honestly don't believe these individuals are very well and I don't say that to be nasty.

Maybe you should turn me loose on them then. Catch me in a real hormonal mood and make me mad at them. I'll make them cry.

Very tempting!

I just stay away from those sites now. I don't think they are very good people.

I try but end up looking psycho by mistake. I am just terrible at defending myself.

I too don't have any inner drive to do antisocial things. As far as other people go, some choose to pursue destructiveness.

It's a choice. Anyone can choose to create over destroy. It's harder for some than others, but still no excuse to pursue destruction if one is inclined towards it.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Maybe some people are just evil and take pleasure in causing distress in other people. If you think about the school/workplace bullies or some nasty people around, it's kind of similar. Although real life bullies are not anonymous, they have no good reason to torment the victim. You can never understand how some other people's minds work.
