Anyone else in this forum have a problem with smoke alarms or fire alarms? Do they startle you?

YES! I hate smoke alarms, security alarms, buzzers, that I NEVER outgrew the fear of!

Yes. The alarms in the office building where I work come complete with debilitating loudness and flashing strobe lights. At our recent fire drill, I was nearly rendered incapacitated from the noise. My heart was pounding, I was shaking and I could barely think straight. :(

What's sad is that few people can understand the panic that can occur just because of sound! I once accidently set off the burglar alarm where I used to work. My boss thought my "over reaction" was hilarious.

I deplore the sound but I recognize the value in them.
Anyone disabling them- especially in apartments- needs to be aware that it is not only potentially illegal (check you local and state fire codes) but it creates an unsafe environment for you and your neighbors. It's very disappointing to hear someone would chose to endanger others' lives for their own comfort.

My feelings/reactions are so intensely negative that I started a thread about it & filled it with essay-length posts describing my bad relationship with this appliance.
http://asdgestalt.com/viewtopic.php?f=8 ... &sk=t&sd=a
Thread title I came up with is "Mechanical Screaming Barnacle" (my name for smoke alarm).

DON'T BET ON IT! TODAY, YEAH, that is RIGHT, AGAIN, the fire alarm went off! It is a LOUD NASTY CONSTANT sound! Anyway, a coworker mentioned about how SHE stayed in her room, and how her cat was really upset! She spoke of how she then put her cat in the cage and she seemed more ok. Anyway, *I* felt like her cat probably did, and SCRAMED! She now hates my guts. I don't know if it is because I made her sound heartless, or what. She has NO idea how I felt!

Is there someone, for some reason, that LIKES fire alarms or smoke detectors? I can't think of a reason anyone one would...well, anyone mostly normal.
