It's getting really annoying... practically every single time I try to post something here I'm being asked to identify such and such in the following pictures, etc.... what's going on?

Only a robot would ask that question.

Spam prevention. It seems that every few weeks or so, the forum becomes overrun with bots spamming up the place (hence, "prove you're not a robot"). The Captchas help prevent said bots from posting.

That being said, I've never had to do one on this site, but I've seen a lot of complaining about it.

Maybe you're a robot and it knows.

I thought this was going to be about how the OP gets picked on by other WP members because (I dunno) maybe he uses overly formal language, or takes things too literally, or is too blunt. or has some other "robotlike" traits!

Those things you have to go through to post are called "captchas". Its to safeguard the site against spam. Spam is often generated automatically programs called "robots" with no actual humans having to log in.

No, I get it, I understand the concept - I just don't know why I'm constantly having to do this on this site... can't it remember my IP address or something? It's too much!

It's weird, some days I only have to do them once or twice, but other days there will be a dozen or more. It can get annoying really quickly, especially if they cause that long paragraph you worked so hard on to be deleted.

My guess is it only happens when you either post a particularly long post, or a post containing a link. The best thing to do would be to just copy what you typed so if it does delete everything you can just paste it and not have to waste time retyping your message.

Some days are worse than others.

And you awake the captchas when quote another post more often then we dont it seems to me.

But frankly- I am not clear as to what the captchas are protecting us from.

In the wee hours of the night often the entire page one of "General Autism Discussion" gets blanketed in spam from those Astrologers from Bangalore, or whatever.

These are posted by robots.

BUT- they are all "original posts". I have never seen a robot enter a thread that was already going on. So if your not the OP of a thread they shouldnt have to prove that you're not a robot. So I dont get way non OPs have to go through that.

I have indeed done that a couple of times. :)
