I was just wondering how many of us Aspies have a prblem with balloons and/or loud noises.

There was a girl in my photography class today that was messing around with one. I had to excuse myself from the class because I started hyperventalating.

People always look at me funny when they find out that I'm afraid of balloons. They can get my fear of the oven and being in unfamiliar places in the dark, but when it comes to balloons they think I'm crazy. :?

I think every aspie in the world would raise their hand on that one

well if I know the noise is about to happen (like if I was holding the balloon and pin) then it won't scare me,but if it was unexpected It would totally freak me out

I don't like vacumn cleaners and telephones and I really dislike muted televisions.

I'm hypersensitive to high frequency noise and human chatter.

The worst physical sensation in the world (other than some of my bad injuries like my neck) is sitting in a busy restaurant. I get physically ill.

I've tried various ear plugs, and so far the best ones are the soft orange kind construction workers use. They seem to block out high frequency very well, even if I only insert them half-way. The only problem is they're disposable.

I'll second that one any day. Loud and unexpected noises jolt me like an electric shock. Popping balloons are one of them.

Not to the point where I'd have to leave the room, but I can't stand the popping balloon noise. Flash photography in a dark room and chalk are worse for me.

I remember when I was in kindergarten and the music teacher gave the whole class balloons to pop. Whatever did she do that for? :?

I was the only kid out of the whole class standing to the side dazed and with my ears covered. I hate it when people are preparing for someone's birthday, inflating balloons because for some forsaken reason (it must be a law of nature) someone always pops one by accident.

i have problems with certain noises but balloons and whatnot aren't among them. balloons make me nervous though because i'll jump out of my seat a little when they pop. for that reason i usually avoid kids parties at all costs.

Have you ever been bothered by anti-theft devices (like the ones by the doors at stores)?

I have the same type of problem with being at the mall for a long time. I get iritated by the noise and then there are the overstimulation problems.

Dunno, I've never shoplifted anything

Incidentally, the only balloon that has ever spooked me is when an inner tube started to squeeze out of the side-wall. I could see it happening, yet the resulting explosion still surprised me. It sounded like a cannon.

I used to get really nervous about people holding and messing around with balloons. Now I am only nervous about people holding or messing around with BIG balloons and they are near me. I don't mind so much if it's across a huge room or something.

I also used to be terrified of the fire alarms in school.

And I hate car brakes (the noisy kind). They just make me cringe. But then again, I think they do that to everyone.

I can handle random balloon popping just fine. It might startle me a bit, but I shake it off pretty easily. I've always been afraid of actually popping them myself, though. Something about knowing the loud noise is coming but not knowing exactly when, perhaps.
