I've noticed that there are a lot of posts on here from people "threatening" to leave the forums for one reason or another, yet they rarely follow through on this. It puzzled me for a while as to why this was so common, but I think I may have figured it out. For many of us with AS, this is the closest thing we have to a social group, and some feel that this is one of the few places they truly "belong". People post threats to leave with the expectation that their friends on here will reply with pleas for them to stay. So, basically, it bolis down to a self esteem/ego thing (which is understandable, since many of us have self-esteem problems to begin with). People like to be told they are wanted/liked/needed/etc. on here. I've done the same type of thing before myself for the same reasons, only in different circumstances.

I'm leaving, I really mean it this time. I swear. Seriously. I'm not kidding around now.

Well I am staying and keeping that dream alive. While everyone was going for lifeboats on the Titanic, I was the guy who was like "Hey we can fix this, I've got my saudering gun and a blowtorch, now someone just hold some iron sheets to fix this damn hole."

Over the years, I’ve lurked on or been a member of many discussion forums and the “I’m leaving” posts are very common. I’ve seen it in tech forums, sports forums, fitness forums, and political forums.

The majority of the time, the person who states they are leaving never leaves at all. They may be gone for a few days if other forum members don’t immediately attempt to convince them to stay, but they do come back. The only times I can recall where I have seen someone leave a forum and not come back was because those people stated in their farewell message that they were having serious issues in their personal lives that required their full attention.

People leave because they are desperate for attention.

I think I did that 10 times. People wont talk about mature forum stuff on the mature forum.

people sometimes feel that no one is listening and think that perhaps someone would care enough to ask them to stay or give them reason to do so if they threatened to leave.
its that simple most of the time.
