I went to the prom with one of my best (male) friends. One day we were talking about how lame the prom would be if we were there with a date - I said I'd be so nervous, I wouldn't have a good time - He agreed with me....later that day, I asked him if he'd like to go to the prom with me and a couple of our other (misfit/odd) friends...he said that it sounded great. At home I was told that girls didn't ask guys to the prom...it's just not done that way but I didn't care, nothing I ever did was the way other girls acted. I just knew we'd have fun because we were not going to prom with someone we were trying to impress or had romantic feelings for.
We totally skipped the Prom Dinner because we were all pretty poor and didn't want to waste our money on some fancy-frilly-overdone meal. We came late (just in time for the dancing) but none of us were dancers so we just sat around together and talked & did the kinds of things we liked doing. After a while, the music got slow and romantic (yuck) and all of the good music had been played so we left and went to a nearby carnival, still in our formal prom attire. There we rode rides, ate cotton candy and had a blast. Everyone was looking at us like we were out of our minds but there was nothing new about those looks, we just laughed and carried on like we were the only ones there at the carnival. It was a great idea - going to Prom with a friend instead of a date. We all had the best time and talked about it with smiles and laughter long after it was over.
Later that week though, I was told by a classmate that the Prom Queen was really angry at me and put out by the whole ordeal. I was confused by this because the Prom Queen was a beautiful popular girl that never had said so much as a hello to me in my entire 4 years of high school. I asked the classmate why she would be mad at me, of all people. I was told that the Prom Queen had asked my friend to go with her to the Prom and he had turned her down saying that he already had a Date for the Prom! He turned down the most Popular girl at school to go with little ol' me
How kewl is that? I'll always love ya for that one Robbie
