Thanksgiving is the least fun holiday? Anyone here agree?

Some distant relatives that live about two hours away invited me to their thanksgiving dinner since my own family lives in a different state. I’m always thankful for the food and I enjoy the company for about the first hour or so but I always end up becoming excruciatingly bored. All the guys inevitably end up sitting around the tube for hours watching football. Possibly the most boring activity in existence.

Not even the food is that worth it to me. I only eat the dark turkey meat because I can’t swallow the white meat unless I drown it in gravy. Mashed potatoes and mushy veggie casseroles are not my thing either. Why is thanksgiving food supposed to be so great? It’s just bland to me.

Okay. End rant.

Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy visiting these people since I don’t see them that often. I just always feel like I’m obligated to stay longer than I really wish to tolerate.

I don't mind Thanksgiving. It's the food I like and the pies. Then I go back to doing my own thing. I am staying another week in Montana since I am off all next week.

Why is it supposed to be great? My guess, it's a holiday and it's an excuse to travel to be with your family and make a fancy meal and use special plates and silverware.

I always saw the fun in making the food, myself. I got good at it and was always entertained as long as I cooked and people would only pop in and out of the kitchen (and my consciousness)on their trips back and forth from their socializing. I didn't mind, I had a good palate so the food I cooked was warm and tasty, and people liked that. However I have lost my perseveration for cooking food, so I don't do that any more. So I had to change my strategy.

I didn't have many good holidays when I was invited to join the 'Whomever' Family for Thanksgiving Dinner and then I was locked into their rituals and habits for the feast day. I got wise about 20 years ago when I found they paid good money for people to work on Holidays. So now I work through them, doing my regular 8 hour shift. For me, at home, I cook a nice roman seafood soup over linguine, pop a couple of pomegranates and sip sparkling apple cider for after work, and call it a night.

This way if someone asks me if I 'need' someplace to go for Thanksgiving or Christmas I tell them 'Oh, thank you, that sounds so nice, I had such a good time there last year, too!; but, I am sorry I have to decline because I will be working that day"

Happy Holidays!

Merle

It was always one of my dad's favorite holidays...he loved turkey. He passed away in 95 a few days before Thanksgiving. I muddle through it too much family togetherness makes me insane at times, and I really don't like turkey...I make it for everyone else and mainly eat the veggies and stuffing.

Merle sounds like you've got a great plan...and I do have to say that sounds yummy. :D

If you help in the kitchen, you get to avoid the socializing and people think you're very nice. :) Win-win.

I love the turkey stuffing and mashed potatoes. thanksgiving rocks. Sadly, there was no turkey this year

Christmas can go either way, usually sh***y. Birthdays, i usually seclude myself or go somewhere nobody will ever be able to find me and ruin it (Not that birthdays are holidays or anything)

Looks like once again I'm the only weird one that doesn't like either turkey or mashed potatoes or watching football. :(

I'm not American and I don't live in the USA.
Thus, my family don't celebrate thanksgiving.
Nevertheless, Christmas Eve is as boring , because we celebrate it the same boring way (not the food), and after the main dish, the second main dish, the cheese, the dessert, and finally, they drink Champagne and everybody gets home at 11 o'clock. During all this meal, discussion about politics in a boring and stubborn way. (I like debates when there are exchanges, but not when people say, in both sides, "I'm right !"

Yes. I am always supposed to drop everything I'm doing and go to a realative's house for dinner because it is a "family holiday". At least I get gifts for Christmas.
