my hometown trondheim has some 165000 people, and i find it to be very much "perfect" in most senses. it has virtually no violent crime, but then again, it has most of what a city should have, in case you need stuff.
i lived for a while in a small town of 10 000 people. i could live in such a place, but i am a city-slicker, and i start to miss the city after a while. scandinavia has other definitions for town/city tho, since we're SO FEW all in all. the city definition starts at 20 000, and trondheim, norway's 3rd largest city, is considered a "storby" in norwegian terms, in other words a metropolis
my spanish family lives in valencia, a city of about a million and a half.
i notice i dont really use any MORE of valencia than i use of trondheim, i tend to stick within the same size of area, but i really enjoy the urbanity of valencia.
i like the "ugly".
mmmmmm :]
Good gosh man, that looks much larger than a city of 165,000! The city I grew up in, which I currently live on the outer fringes of, Shreveport, Louisiana, has 200,000 people. While it doesn't look tiny, it doesn't look nearly as large as that city. This place is home and I love it, but it's just not big enough to keep me content for many more years. My city has plenty of urban grit as well, but the riverfront area is really clean and new-looking with high-rise casino hotels and such. Here's one of my own photos of this city:
