This is just another one of my stupid questions but I'm curious if people sometimes looks at a posters profile before answering to a thread or an individual post.

Funny you should mention that. Usually the profile has little to say about a person- but I accidentally clicked on Old Souls' profile rather than the link to his new thread. He needs to correct his gender setting. Otherwise I'd have thought he was a lesbian.

Sometimes.
There are times when it helps to know if someone is 15 or 45, as the answer may change or need to be modified depending on that. Or where someone is located...

Never. Is that a social-instinct thing?
I recently added to my profile that I don't want to cross-talk or exchange emails.
It occurred to me that anyone who visits my profile might be attempting to contact me, and that would be a good place to express my a-social preferences.

It depends on the discussion. Sometimes its a good idea if discussing something controversial. If someone puts in their profile their beliefs or interests, you definitely do not want to offend someone.. even if its unintentional.

I will look at someone's profile if their avatar, username, or something they posted interests me. But as a matter of habit, I don't look at people's profiles on any regular basis.

That's intersting as I do find that I enjoy being antagonistic towards people who have stupid looking avatars. since they look stupid of course, while I'm very friendly with people who have 'welcoming' looking avatars. Maybe I need to do an avatar thread.

It's funny you should ask this because I recently had a reply from someone who made a
remark, out of the blue, that cast doubt on my status of being self-diagnosed.
One of the first things I thought was 'How many people check another's profile first then use it
to adjust their reply accordingly ? '
Personally,in the course of routine discussions,it's never occured to me that the status of
anyone's diagnosis or otherwise would make any difference to how I replied to a specific post.

I can't prove it but I suspect that a lot of people try to 'feel out the water' so to speak before they reply to threads. I really hate the politically correct replies since they are so shallow.
