So, I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome yesterday (dec 23).
My psychologist had been having therapy sessions with me about anxiety, but once I felt I was over it I asked to be tested for AS, so she basically looked back on all her notes on me and got my mum to talk about how I was as an infant and child.
She thinks I should go on CRS, which I guess is something that gives me assistance in finding a job. I hope it works out. I've never had a job. Then she is going to help me with certain AS traits that I find difficult to deal with.
I'm feeling very hopeful now and thinking life isn't going to be as tough as it once was.
I have had negative feedback from one family member. She has always said that I've never had it as bad as I thought I have. But she's worked but still says I could get a job. She's got no idea how many application letters I've sent off and job interviews I've sat. I've talked about my speech problems in here but she doesn't think I have a problem. I dunno, I just think with my speech difficulties I can't explain myself properly in a job interview.
Anyway, I realise some people will act this way. I told her once and that's probably the only time I'll bring it up. It would be good to have my family on my side though.
I'll probably only tell people close to me. I don't feel embarrassed to. My sister already told her boyfriend a day before my diagnosis, so she'll probably gossip about it to her friends. Her boyfriend showed an interest in it though.

I thought this was going to be one those threads where fictional characters are diagnosed. Thank goodness it isn't. xD Edit: Oh. No. But to get in 'spirit of things', I think Voldemort would have attachment issues rather than an ASD. Those conditions can mimic each other to some extent:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attachment_disorder

And a dash of APD, naturally.

The first part of your diagnostic story is quite similar to mine actually.

HOW do you figure potter is ASPIE?!?!? He doesnt have quite the right attitude, perserverence, etc.... Hermeine is FAR closer! Think about it! She seems arrogant. She is literal. She has trouble with friends. People don't really "like" her, but RESPECT her. She is OBSESSED with the occult arts, history, and has an encyclopedic knowledge! In some ways, she is like I am.

Harry potter, by contrast, just seems like a humble, decent, average wizard that lucked out. The story is that his mother's love protected him, and he got a part of voldemort's character that blessed him with more power, and the ability to use a wand that was a mirror of voldemort's. FURTHER, other's hatred of voldemort and their appreciation of the potter legend helped him to become an instant hit. His lack of control elsewhere, and lack of a decent family helped to cement HIS attachment to the others. Though all, including hermeine, appreciated him, even HE appreciated hermeine.

Actually, some things about Voldemort were revealed towards the end, and he seemed to be powerhungry. ALSO, he WAS arrogant! So I think he didn't seem aspie at all.

I just used that thread title because:
1)It's a quote I say for some reason
2)I'm obsessed with Harry Potter
3)I think Daniel Radcliffe (actor that plays Harry Potter) might have Asperger's Syndrome. I know he has Dyspraxia and there might be similar traits in both conditions.
4)I used to think I was so different that I actually was a wizard and I have been known to refer to NT's as muggles.
5)I thought people would read more then the thread title - oh that's right I said it *reeoww*

I think the only Aspie in the Harry Potter books is Neville Longbottom <3

You might be right about Radcliffe. I don't know about him well enough, and some actors are aberrations because they ARE treated differently, etc... "american" culture, as far as actors are concerned is contrary to how Radcliffe acts, but maybe british culture is different. Dyspraxia IS a possible comorbid of AS. They ALSO may have SIDs, ANOTHER possible comorbid. I have SIDs. As for Dyspraxia, I guess I have SOME symptoms:

Quote:
[edit] Fine motor control
Difficulties with fine motor co-ordination lead to problems with handwriting, which may be due to either ideational or ideo-motor difficulties. Problems associated with this area may include:

*Learning basic movement patterns.
Developing a desired writing speed.
Establishing the correct pencil grip
Hand aching while writing

[edit] Whole body movement, coordination, and body image
Issues with gross motor coordination mean that major developmental targets including climbing affected. Problems associated with this area may include:

Poor timing.
*Poor balance (sometimes even falling over in mid-step). Tripping over one's own feet is also not uncommon.
*Difficulty combining movements into a controlled sequence.
*Difficulty remembering the next movement in a sequence.
Cross-laterality, ambidexterity, and a shift in the preferred hand are also common in people with dyspraxia.[citation needed]
Dyspraxics may also have trouble determining the distance between them and other objects.[citation needed]

* To a degree.
The writing differences were taken care of before 10yo. Heck, I decided to change my writing style only a couple years ago(I was over 40yo) to approach a writing speed I wanted.

I think those are the only things that I have that match dyspraxia, but it is a significant subset.

I'm not sure if dypraxics are affected by speech, but Radcliffe in interviews speaks similar to those on this board have described. You should look up a few interviews with him on You Tube to see for yourself.
In his early interviews he didn't really make eye contact and seemed nervous. And his answers were quite short.

I think I may have mild dyspraxia too.

Hey, congratulations on your Dx! It sounds like it will be the start of a new path in life for you.

And don't worry about the naysayers. There's at least one in every crowd. And family. Don't know why.

And definitely, Snape was an Aspie. And the most courageous person in the story (at least, according to Harry, who had more social skills than your average Aspie). So there.

Thanks!
That person who really doesn't think AS is a big deal is driving me crazy. I'll be thankful once Christmas is over as horrible as that sounds. I just need some quiet time but this person is staying over for 5-6 days.

edit:Actually when I was talking about the singer of The Vines having AS she replied with 'yeah, I always thought something was wrong with him.' :x

When Harry was given the chance to approach a woman that WANTED him, he STILL stumbled! OTHERS approached HIM! So I would argue that the social skills don't show up.

Snape DID end up being a good guy, etc... Still, a lot was EXPECTED. So I don't know if you can really count that.

Hermione’s obsessions with said stuff weren’t obsessions per se in my opinion but she seemed rather to treat learning as a way to gain the whole available knowledge – she simply behaved like it was her duty to know EVERYTHING she had lessons about in Hogwarts. And she had problems with friends because she always treated school duties so seriously.
