I got watching the movie "A Christmas Story" and got to the part where a kid sticks his tongue to a post after a dare. This reminded me of my youth when I actually did the same. It wasn't due to a dare however, it was a very cold winter day and I just decided to try it. This was at the schoolyard in front of all other kids and the teacher had to come with some water to free my tongue.

Looking back this would be kind of embarrassing. Did anyone else try this or anything similar?

I jabbed a needle into my little brother's backside after seeing it in a cartoon. I wanted to see if he would fly up into the air, but instead he just started crying. Mind you, I was only 5 or 6 at the time, but probably still old enough to know better!

Yeah but it wasn't that cold out so I was able to pull my tongue from the post. I saw another boy doing it too so I tried it.

EXACT same experience except mine was with the freezer compartment on an old fridge when i was akid. I climbed up on to the bottom ridge of the fridge so i could reach my tongue onto it. And yes... the fridge was turned on, and the only way to remove my tongue was by RIPPING it off. i always used to put things in my mouth and test things with my tongue - just another one of those things that makes sense with the AS dx later in life. that has continued on until this day.

I also used to test how hot a frying pan was by touching the hot surface. these are all odd little things i do to this day, and the only place i get any identification with it, is with other people on the spectrum who have more of a sensory relationship with the world.

Pipe that was the fill point for the heater oil (there wan't any oily bits where I stuck my tongue). I was maybe 5? Not sure. Why did I do it? Impulsive and curious youth, I don't recall there being a particular 'thought' process that lead to it. It was quite cold out, and there was a lot of mass to the pipe. My mother had to bring out a bowl of very warm tapwater to help me get it off and it still left a fair bit of taste buds on the pipe. Tongues heal fast though, the mouth is IIRC the fastest healing part of your body.

Yes, it's a bit embarrassing but not hugely. It's also part of what makes "A Christmas Story" so darn funny. Funny because it's true! :)

P.S. There is a picture of me somewhere at my mom's where I dressed up very ... oddly in the face of the cold to go to my grandmothers a block away. That picture is far more embarrassing. Not sure why but my mother had gone there for something, telling me to stay put, and I decided she was taking to long to get back. I was older but not that much.

I never tried it but I heard it's painful. I'll never do it, but I've seen it a lot on TV.

Yes, join the club. Pain is your friend, the gatekeeper to experience!

:wall: :wtg:

P.S. Although I wouldn't really recommend it, it does only hurts for a little bit (as long as you don't stick too much on or it's really cold and you leave it there too long and don't have anything to help get it off, it was like -20 out when I did it). It's like pulling a big bandage off a hairy leg. After that you just have to be careful not to rub your tongue and when you eat over the week, and you'll want to avoid high temperature foods. If you stick to liquid diets or really soft food you might hardly notice it. As I mentioned tongues heal fast.

i stuck a lot on. it really hurt when i had to rip it off. as usual in my feral family of astpie triated individuals (not all , but some) no-one helped!! siblings watched on. there was a fair bit of blood - that stained some of the freezer ice and also trickled down my chin.

:D
