...does it follow that those of us who don't hang out with anyone are non-entities?

If that saying is true, then I guess I'm a really messed up thing. 8O
I'd be a.... part-male-part-female-ultra-depressed-part-rat-part-cat-part-chihuahua(*rants on and on*)

Maybe it means you hang-out with yourself and are self-centered?

I don't like "pretty" little phrases/quotes. Same with analogies, they're often far too simplistic.
Einstein once said to never simplify anything more than it can be simplified...but, I suppose I just broke that rule by trying to describe it, didn't I? Lol.

My thoughts exactly, so if I were to own a rat... would I like cheese more?

Actually, rodents shouldn't have too much cheese. It can give them the runs.

Trust me I am NOT who I hang out with. Not at all LOL. My friends get drunk on many occasions; I have never been drunk. My friends get high all the freakin time; I have never been high. Sure, we have lots and lots in common, but most people would associate me with unruly drunken behavior and label me a weedhead because that's the first thing people would think upon seeing my friends haha

No, those who do not hang out with anyone are themselves.

Presuming that the statement made in the thread title is correct, of course.

Technically, yes, but to be logically true, a conclusion has to be based on sound precedent. And "You are who you hang out with" is not a true statement.

While you do tend to choose people who are more like you than most to spend time with, your identity isn't based on those people--not unless you have some kind of psychological disorder. (Borderlines often say that they don't feel like they have an identity of their own, which is responsible for a lot of the overly "clingy" relationships they get into, for example.)

So it's not, "You are who you hang out with," but, "Who you are influences who you hang out with." And an extremely introverted person may want to hang out with nobody, or hang out with a select group infrequently.

Anyway, Aspie identity is often rather self-contained, anyway; more so than NT identity. Not mirroring others' emotions, being distanced from culture, and being predisposed to original thought rather than teamwork tends to make a person who determines his identity based on internal rather than external factors.
