Here's a list I made that some aspies wish NT's knew (based on what I've read in some forums)

1. We don't lack empathy-we just have a hard time showing it

2.Not all of us are math genius

3.We have sense of humor-sometimes its different from yours

4.Some of us are capable of lying-we also happen to value honesty

5.Not all of us have superior memory

6.We can be creative

7.Not all conversations that we hold are only about our interests

8. We can have friends-its just harder for us to make any relationships

9. We can hold a job

10. Not all of us are concrete thinkers-some of us can be analytical

11. We can live independently-but it may require some guidance

12. Holding eye contact is possible for some

13. It's not always easy to take advantage of us-its possible for some of us to tell if you're an ass

14. We're not retards-Asperger's/Autism/PDD-NOS is just a different way of thinking

15.We all different, just like you're different from others-we don't just fit into one category, so don't stereotype

16.Not all of us have ADD/Bipolar/Schizophrenia/Dyslexia

17.Autism/Aspergers can have its advantages-some of us don't want a cure or won't care for one

Feel free to add/change anything, but please be nice about it. Just know that I am not bashing NT's.

I am not an exhibit.

I am not a ticking time-bomb.

I am not a robot.

I know how to dress myself.

I don't need to be medicated.

I do not have a psychotherapist on speed-dial.

I am not easily distracted by shiny things ... donuts, yes ... but not shiny things.

I do not pick my nose and eat the snots.

I am not a fecophiliac, pedophile, or anime freak.

I am a human being.

I got a temporary ban from a my school's file sharing community because I was trolling....... I didn't realise that was what I was doing, plus by definition, you can't be trolling if you don't intend to be. I was just having one of my more odd moments, rambling on about monkeys in a way that made no sense.

Number 13, I've been taken advantage of so many times, most of those times I was aware of what was happening and later walked away from the relationship.

I like your list. Especially point 17. I consider Aperger's a gift, not a problem. In the highly technological future most of us Aspies are well endowed to prosper and excel. From an evolutionary point of view we might even be The Next Big Thing.

A lot of these views are flat out wrong and not based on reality. I will address all of them.

1. We don't lack empathy-we just have a hard time showing it

> People with AS don't have the same amount of empathy as NTs. People with AS are lacking a certain amount of empathy.

2.Not all of us are math genius

> Who cares?

3.We have sense of humor-sometimes its different from yours

> Humor is objective. You portray humor as being subjective. Something is funny, or it is not.

People with AS don't have a sense of humor. Just because people with AS laugh, doesn't mean people with AS have a sense of humor. People with AS laugh at inappropriate times.

4.Some of us are capable of lying-we also happen to value honesty

> People with AS are still too honest. Honest to our own detriment.

5.Not all of us have superior memory

> Who cares?

6.We can be creative

> I have no creativity whatsoever.

7.Not all conversations that we hold are only about our interests

> Most are. To our detriment.

8. We can have friends-its just harder for us to make any relationships

> Having friends is difficult the way we think and act. Anyone can have a friend. So what?

9. We can hold a job

> I am 37 years old and on federal disability living with my mother. All because of AS related disorders. For the most part, employment is difficult for us.

10. Not all of us are concrete thinkers-some of us can be analytical

> For the most part, not true.

11. We can live independently-but it may require some guidance

> Living with guidance is not living independently.

12. Holding eye contact is possible for some

> But not for most.

13. It's not always easy to take advantage of us-its possible for some of us to tell if you're an ass

> Most people with AS are easily manipulated.

14. We're not retards-Asperger's/Autism/PDD-NOS is just a different way of thinking

> Horsesh*t. People with AS are social ret*ds. The way people with AS think is dysfunctional.

15.We all different, just like you're different from others-we don't just fit into one category, so don't stereotype

> People with AS are different. People with AS are strange and uncomfortable to be around.

16.Not all of us have ADD/Bipolar/Schizophrenia/Dyslexia

> A lot do.

17.Autism/Aspergers can have its advantages-some of us don't want a cure or won't care for one

> Mostly disadvantages. There are more advantages to being NT.

Just because you say "some" or "not all" doesn't mean something doesn't define a person with AS.

I've been told I have a wonderful sense of humour.
Sometimes I laugh when everyone else in the group laughs and is smiling.
I can pick up on that.
Sometimes I laugh by myself or my own jokes, when other people aren't laughing.
Sometimes I laugh and others don't like me laughing.
It really depends on the situation.

When is the "appropriate time to laugh" anyway?

Who decides when the "appropriate time" is?

Just curious.

To KevinLA: Just because you fit these stereotypes doesn't mean the rest of us do. I personally would like more people to realize the things on this list.

I guess the only thing that I would say is: Even though we may appear clueless or 'dumb' in some situations, we're just people trying our best like you are. It's not easy for us to do the things you take for granted. Please, try to open your mind and have a little compassion.

I was trying to tell my husband about what was discussed on the 'in our own world' thread in the hopes that it would help him understand why I am so 'careless' sometimes and I got about 20 seconds into the discussion before he said "That's really stupid."

I gave up.

When something is funny.

Otherwise, laughing is inappropriate and eventually will alienate you with other people.
