1.Prone to depression
2.Prone to self-harm
3.Needing solitude
4.Liking the dark because our eyes don't like when it's too bright
5.Not liking sports
6.Not fitting in
7.Being unpopular
8.Not fitting gender steriotypes
9.Prone to suicide

P.S. I'm not emo
P.P.S. I know this is all generilization and and it's all for different reasons. An emo kid doesn't normally fit AS diagnostic criteria. Just agree that this list is clever!

When you start comparing outward manifestations rather than symptom sources/causes, of course many things seem alike. But it's entirely superficial. There is no real comparison. You might as well say that a man stabbed in the chest has parallels with a man having a heart attack because both have chest pain and may die. Superficially, that IS a similarity, but it wouldn't hold up in court!

Wow Tails, what an insightful reply. LOL!
They're emo because they're depressed and we're depressed because we're aspies...I wonder if all emos have Asperger's syndrome LOL!

I noticed the parallels too. I don't think Emo has anything to do with suicide though, more likely teenage depression. I read somewhere that Emo is short for 'Emotional' and that everyone is Emo.

I don't really care much for hardcore punk myself.

If I had to compare emokids to any sort of pyschological abnormality, I would choose bipolar rather than aspergers.

It's really annoying that a whole bunch of kids who used to think hurting themselves was cool now think having a disease is cool.
If I had to pick one they're more like, I'd go with Münchausen syndrome.

I was going to say don't compare us to emos...apparently many people hate emos...so don't compare us to them! :P

EDIT: for those unaware of what emo is.... (granted some pics aren't unbiased)

I always thought an emo is someone who complains about how bad their lives are, especially when they throw themselves a pity party. I am aware of the culture too but I think that is a stereotype so I think not all emos dress up in dark clothes and listen to depressing music.

Everyone is emo sometimes. We all need to talk about what is bothering us to let it all out.

There is something about the appearence of people who call themselves emo that I don't like. I think it has to do with the fact that they do not look like they care about their appearence. Who would want to look that way anyways? I cannot pull off the look I want so eaily, mostly because it requires more personal hygiene than I am used to doing for myself. I am not emo, nor will I ever be. I may be slightly depressed right now, but definitly not emo.

"1.Prone to depression"
Not always the case with people with AS

"2.Prone to self-harm"
Again, rarely the case with people on the spectrum

"3.Needing solitude"
For entirely different reasons - Aspies want solitude to get away from sensory/social pressures or to engage in their routines. Emos say they want to be left alone, but how do often do you see a group of emos at the mall...

"4.Liking the dark because our eyes don't like when it's too bright"
Don't know where you're getting this?

"5.Not liking sports"
I love baseball, football, and also enjoy playing golf and tennis... :?: Some Aspies/autistics don't have the coordination for sports, emos just don't like it because it is not depressing

"6.Not fitting in"
"7.Being unpopular"
For entirely different reasons, again. Emos choose to hate other people and not fit in with anyone except other emos.

"8.Not fitting gender steriotypes"
Have you ever heard "male characteristics to the extreme"? It sure describes me.

"9.Prone to suicide"
Another broad generalization. I myself am the opposite of emo...

I hate the emo sterotype. I got constantly made fun of for being "emo" when I wasn't even trying to fit any kind of label.

surprisingly not a lot of times whenever I go out to a suburban mall (re. stereotypical majority-white people who live nearby in the suburbs)

that is correct, but there can be less of a fitting in to gender roles as well...
