Its a country radio station based in Provedence RI. Every year they do a radiothon to benefit autism speaks. They don't accept autistics as normal people and see us as needing to be cured. Call the station at 1-401-224-1285 and let them know how upset you are for them to be teaming with such a group. Let everyone know.

A copy of the letter i just emailed the station manager:

Hello,

All day on April 22 I listened to your radiothon for Autism speaks. I am 41 Year old man with Asperger syndrome, a form of high functioning autism. I don't know if you are aware but the group Autism Speaks has no one with high functioning autism working for them. They view autism as a disease that must be cured. They do not promote acceptance of people with autism.

I was very offended with what I heard on your station. All day you promoted Autism Speaks agenda of fear and ignorance towards this disorder. Making it sound like every person with autism has to be cured. I and I know other people that are high functioning with autism. We are happy with who we are.

I hope you can think about changing organizations for your future radiothons. I am telling all the autistic websites I go to how your station likes to promote fear and ignorance of people with autism. Acceptance, not cures is the answer.

For crap's sake Ken. They're not against autistic people, they're against autism. The world would be better off without autism. It's bad. In general. This is why curing it is important.

Autism Speaks has no high function autistics working for them. They promote fear and ignorance with people with autism. They never promote acceptence of the person. They see the person as a sickness that needs to be cured.

I do not agree with calling autism bad and that the world would be better off without it. For me, autism has been a gift. I would not want to get rid of my autism---and I know many in the WrongPlanet, and in other places I am familiar with, do not want their autism cured. I would not take a cure for autism. I am me and I am proud of that fact, and I enjoy my life with autism. I view autism as a difference. To cure autism would be like Dr. Freeman lobotomizing psychiatric patients in the mid part of the 20th Century and taking away their "self"---wrong!
