I understand AS people tend to have strong focus or preocupations for some narrow fields, such as collecting stuff or learning everything about dinosaurs, stars etc.

But I was wondering if some people have this strong, persistent focus for less than mild things such as for collecting weapons (legally of course) or for violent games (physical or video) or for "strong" sports (hunting, karate, restling) or for wars/armies, in the sense that their whole live revolves around this. I am not saying they ARE violent, just obsessed with the topic (guns, videos, fighting etc..)

Please shed some light on this, is it possible to have such interests rather than milder ones? If yes, why? How do others react to these interests (are they afraid)?

Thanks!

See, the trouble here is that, by your phrasing, you only see these interests as "ways to hurt people and things." So it's like you asked, "How many aspies are interested in various ways to cause pain and death? Not that they'd DO that of course, but..." And that, NLG, is gonna rub some people the wrong way. A war buff is primarily a historian focusing on a major facet of human experience. The sports nut is all about statistics. The martial artist is practicing an athletic art form handed down hundreds of years from an exotic culture. Hunters are fulfilling their natural right as omnivore predators in nature to feed off of other animals who would otherwise overpopulate. And violent video games serve the same purpose as an action/adventure movie: to experience vicariously the danger and determination of the protagonist. Lumping these all into Beavis going "yeah..yeah FIRE! KILL! DESTROY! Heh heh, cool." is a bit short sighted, if you don't mind me saying so.

i have no interest in violence or injuring people.
my intense interests are intense enough. maybe they may be more intense than simple violent intent.

i have no desire to cause any living thing any harm. however at one point i was interested in explosives. i was in a psychiatric hospital school for kids which were not able to operate in the main stream.
i developed a mixture that was very effective and i demonstrated it one night to another patient. he was about 14 years old and i was about 12.
i dropped a telephone book on a match heads volume of the material, and the phone book was concussed and thrown into the air a few inches.

the other boy stole some of my mixture and he planted some around the grounds of the psychiatric unit where we lived.
he then sat in a tree and would not come down and said that he was going to injure people if they did not accede to his demands.

some kid stepped on some of the mixture and it broke his toe and sprained his ankle.

then they said for all the kids to stay still, and they got the mad boy out of the trees, and we never saw him again.
it was traced back to me and i was moved for a short while to a more secure unit.
but i was simply interested in rocketry and stuff like that. not injury.

anyway, i feel uncomfortable talking about it as there is much sensitivity to security threats these days.
i am not a security threat, but i would hate to be seen as one.

i think your question is an interesting one, but i think that asperger people (well only me... i am not talking on anyone elses behalf) are so afraid of penalties and incarceration (removal of solitude and routine) that they would never consider injuring others.
whatever

In general, I hate sports. And I am a very non-violent person mostly, though I do know there is a time and place for it. I personally couldn't ever hurt anyone, though.

That said, however, I have always liked violent video games but ONLY because I know they are games. I have been to a couple of MMA matches and I honestly can't stand it. I only went because I was trying to be like all the neurotypical guys I work with when they invited me.

A while back I did develop a brief interest in the Zodiac Killer. I had an old friend who was based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina and they had the guy who killed the female soldier and used thr Zodiac's calling card. Clearly it wasn't the Zodiac, but this did pique my interest in the Zodiac. I already owned the movie so I watched it again, joined Zodiac forums, and researched it like crazy. My wife was getting worried about me, but as I told her it was not like I was trying to be like him, it was just a special interest at the time and I wanted to try my hand at solving the case.

I'm obsessed with violent video games; I'm also fascinated with serial killers.

But if I witness actual physical injury I throw up. Seeing a nosebleed can make me pass out. But if it's a movie or a video game, I can be in the middle of gore and not be bothered by it.

I think sports are too orderly. Give me the most violent video games and I have a great time. I like gory images of how people died to. I'm not able to collect them, but if I was I'd have a little library now wouldn't I? And as for seeing it in real life, I'm not so sure it would turn me off. I wouldn't care for the incident, though.

I am extremely interested in the history of wars and battles. I love watching -The Military Channel- particularly the programs on weapons systems. My favorites are nukes and napalm. BooRah!

I only have normal interests and likes, but I always take a fleeting interest into morbid things. It's something I enjoy, find to be interesting unlike most people who feel very uncomfortable or bored by it. Anyway, I do not think that makes as me any strange. But as I said, it's not an AS special interest or an obsession.

But I don't see how it makes any difference if one guy is collecting coins due to his AS and another girl knows everything about torture throughout the centuries.

One is 'socially appropriate' and one is not. And AS means you don't intuitively know which one is socially appropriate doesn't it.

I have an interest in things with NO relation to each other or the real world. Here is a list:

Fire (its bright and im sort of interested by all bright things)
Ghosts (Paranormal in general)
Fighting (in extreme cases)
Video games (all forms, racing, RPG, shooting...)
Money (ive tried it all, from bein a con artist to attemptin a business)
Makeshift weapons (wrenches, shanks, bats. i dont use them, just make or collect.)

Anyone can link those?

Here are a few of my more "violent" interests......

-I collect hunting knives
-Sharpening knives
-Hunting and trapping
-Obsessed with ATV's and motocross
-Used to collect assult rifles and other guns(before I became a fellon)
-Performance motorcycles
-Musclecars and modern performance cars
-Building performance engines
-Used to be obsessed with martial arts when younger(couldn't afford it)
-Someday I want to try base-jumping,hang-gliding,rapelling,etc.....

I am not violent at all, actually quite the opposite. I consider myself to be an "adrenalyne junkie", more than anything. I can't help it, I just enjoy the rush.

i am fascinated by bladed weapons and horror movies, but actual violence and injuries terrify me. i just like the look of a smooth and sharp blade, and how the metal feels (or ceramic, i find ceramic blades really interesting), and i also admire the artistry that goes into the special effects of horror movies.

however since cgi is becoming more prevalent in modern horror, i find myself less fascinated by them because i know that the effects aren't actually there.

I too get fascinated with serial killer, violent video games, even tragic events like 9/11, until it becomes personal. I am more sensitive now to the idea of losing a loved one than ever before. Hearing about tragedies on a personal level bothers me more than I ever thought possible (kind of strange against the idea of becoming de-sensitized), But give me Grand Theft Auto or Fable II and I can be an utter sadist. Somehow I'm equally thrilled and terrified of violence.
