Do you feel you need subtitles or closed captioning to fully enjoy a DVD or TV program? I feel this way, and there's nothing wrong with my hearing (why does it always say "close captioning for the hearing impaired"?) it's just that I 'miss' a lot of the dialogue if I can't read it, and I always end up zoning out if I don't have the words to focus on.
Can anyone relate?

Yeah, definitely, I never watch movies unless I'm with other people, I just can't stay focused, I think auditory processing disorder or something similar may be involved, I rember reading something about the fact that ASD's people process audio stimuli slower than NTs, in my case this definitely happens, so you just can't keep up with the flow of the movie.

Edit: the same happens with books, I find myself constantly stuck.

Yes, I have it on all the time. But I have noticed that it's not always a "word for word" translation, which is darned annoying.

If I didn't live alone, I would be damned annoying to watch videos with - I have to catch every word & if I don't, I replay the scene with the captions/subtitles. Sometimes I leave them on for the entire video (even when I know the dialog by heart.)

I'm glad it is not just me who does this. People keep asking why I put subtitles on. I have always assumed it is something to do with my auditory processing speed or something like that. Like you, my hearing is normal, if anything too sensitive.

Me too! And if a show that is normally subtitled, for once isn't...I can't follow the plot or dialogue at all.

No, I don't have that. My sister does though (and to my knowledge, she's not AS).

I always put the subtitles on when it is just me watching. Other people seem to not like having captions on though, so I have to turn them off.

I prefer them on - and there is something wrong with my hearing.

but that's not the reason.

I get the nuances of a conversation far, far better when I can read it. I also get much more time to interpret since I can always read much faster than the subtitles display.

I generally hate those noise bits though [glass clinks as he puts it down] but sometimes they're quite revealing...

eg:
- When it writes the lyrics of a song in the background - and they're related to the film.
- When the sound heralds the arrival of someone or something but is so low that it's unnoticed by those with good hearing.
- When the captions reveal a major plot device which slips past the unsuspecting audience**...

**The best example of this is in Star Wars Attack of the Clones when Anakin avenges his mother's death. In the film, there's a howl of anguish and an "Anakin noooo!!" type sound. On the subtitles however it says;

[Voice of Qui-Gon Jinn:] "Anakin noooo!!"

yup - subtitles and caption here too.
I also like silent films - they force you to concentrate on the movie.
