Most people want to cure autism. The most common ones seem to be "go out more and socialize". Occasionally they read a magazine or a piece of news and would tell you excitedly about the new cures. What have you heard about these cures?

My mom has just sent me a story of a 7 year old little boy who cured himself by doing lots of yoga. She suggested we all take up yoga. Well I have nothing against yoga, but a little boy doing lots of yoga sounds like special interest or obsession to me. Maybe he's a yoga savant, which doesn't make him normal at all. I'll believe he's cured if he's 27 now and holds a good job, married with kids, drives a car, has many friends and spends all his time watching sports, drinking beer and tinkering in the garage. :) OK I know I'm stereotyping. Maybe I should do yoga. I need to lose a few lbs. :D

What Whateveramidoing said.

Bleach enemas (for young children no less) is about the worst "cure" for autism, and the worst cure for ANY thing, that I have ever heard of. And that upstages everything else.

Bleach enemas is the first thing I thought of when I saw the title of your thread.

But I get what you're saying. Folks do often think that your autism will just go away if you do some simple thing.

Some folks assign autism to being caused by gut bacteria, or by some other nutrition related thing.

And there is at least one WP member who SWEARS that he keeps his autism at bay through a special diet combined with food supplements. And he gets offended if you doubt him. He is convinced it works. So what can one say? It probably does do something for him (maybe reduce stimming).

But atleast yoga, having a balanced diet, and going out socializing, and maybe even taking up social dancing, are not bad for you. And are usually good for any one (NT or ASD). Even if none of them literally actually "cures" autism.

So they arent the worst pieces of advice that someone could give an autistic.

The same cant be said for bleach enemas.

The fact that anybody thinks there's a "cure" at all in ridiculous.

One's symptoms can be alleviated to a great extent----but, like the Common Cold, no cure is possible.

The yoga thing might have helped the boy with sensory integration.
Anyways, the most stupid thing is teaching autistic kids not to play how they wish, but how other kids play in hopes that this way autism will go away. Like, dolls and social games. I don't find it wrong to teach how to tea party with Teddy bears but that won't cure autism.

The bleach enema thing is indeed horrific, but the funniest one I can recall would have to be the chelation shoes. Apparently, ASD is caused by mercury poisoning, and the cure takes the form of special shoes that suck the mercury out through your feet. Seems legit.

Lupron protocol ("Chemical castration")

Seems like it would stunt a young man's growth.

I was going to mention the chelation too. It's ridiculous, and quite dangerous to expose someone to heavy metal detoxification, especially if they're not being poisoned by heavy metals!

I've also heard of those stupid magnet bracelets that are supposed to vibrate at a healing frequency or some nonsense. I just laugh that people in this day and age can still be gullible enough to believe in that kind of pseudo-science magic.

If you truly think a child of yours is better off dead than autistic, curing them is very, very easy. At least if you’re not afraid to go to jail, that is.

I just love (not) how if someone who happens to be autistic commits murder the media makes everyone else think all people on the spectrum are violent, but when parents are violent to or murder their autistic children the media makes it sound like the parents look like total angels, and people feel sympathy for them.

These parents should ask themselves first if they really think *their* lives are going to be any easier if they kill their autistic kids, because if anything being a murderer and a criminal and having the dead child haunting them (not in the paranormal sense) for the rest of their lives will makes thing a lot worse.

I was just going to mention that. I find those practices very disturbing.
