Worrying more about other people's lives than your own is just a typical feature of humanity. It is the foundation of civilization. It's what ensures that a culture largely shares one way of thinking and continues to get along. Placing the group above oneself is also a form of altruism that helps ensure the survival of a species. It's essentially groupthink, and it can be both good and bad.
Though personally I think people should just stay out of each others business.
