Hello,

First I want to say that this site is a great find for me. It looks like the people here do an awesome job.

I have asbergurs (diagnosed) and am really thinking of applying for SSI (Disability). Because of Asbergurs people don't want to be around me (they treat me almost like I have a contagious plague). This ends up causing me to go into depression and then I end up trying to issolate myself and get upset with the people nearest to me. It happens at church where I volunteer as a Audio/Visual technician, school and internships. It makes me worry that if I do get a job that I won't be able to keep it. But I don't want to be stuck on SSI, I want to be a productive person as well.

It really is hard when money starts to run low, and my family is not supportive of me at all. My parents think I will accomplish nothing in life. I basically have a small group of close friends that are the closest thing I have as family.

I think it's something really worth having for the times it's needed. At times it might not be but then the amount you're getting in a month is gonna go way down anyway. Right now I couldn't really have a place to live without the help of the SSDI I'm getting.

I just fear that going through the application process is going to add to my depression.

I've just been through it with my son. The people we dealt with were very supportive and positive.

How long did it take for you to get your son through the system and did you get a lawyer or anything. Is there any advice on how to make it as quick as possible?

do you really feel you need it, i mean, if u just cant work, then sure u earned it, but for a while, i assumed I could never amount to anything in life and that was my only option. What I wanted in life was simple, to have a decent standard of living and support a small family, and I worked hard to get at least half way their, having SSI makes that dream unatainable. I had to work thru my (minor for the most part) isses with my HFA and get a job that supports me well (good enough anyways, i have nice things but live cheaply/efficently).

Think real hard, their is no job, nothing you will be able to do to achieve what you want outa life??

I'd love to have a job, but I feel like I can't get along with people for some reason which makes a job impossible.

TheZach, if I were you, I would exhaust all job possibilities before getting SSI. No matter how difficult you find the prospect of working, the ultimate depressing thought is that you can't provide for yourself. Trust me, I've had some really suckful jobs, independence is always preferable to dependance. This view isn't based on some conservative ideology, it's based on observing some of my family members who have chosen not to work, it hasn't worked out well for them.

The only people that help around here are lawyers. And they want lots of money.

heh, so one of the many differences between England and the US, its easier to get assistance in England (so i hear, i would not know myself)

I work in a buissy warehouse (over stimulation occures constantly, so i self medicate with powerful pain medication, unfortunatly in order to deal with that and ppl) but often, i get to work alone im in a more seculded part of the warehouse and the boss knows i hate working with others. You will always have to deal with ppl its inevitable (as we live on a crowded ass planet) but you could find a job that suits you away from many ppl.

I say no i tryed to get it and it was a very annoying process and now iam glad they did not give it to me. What they will give you is a very small amount of money for alot of annoynace and limited jobs when you do find work. I tryed for 5 years with help from family in one state and now i have moved to a diffrent state and job wise iam doing much better.

Then look for a job that doesn't involve talking with people too much.

There are lots of jobs that you can do and be by yourself.

Didn't need a lawyer. Just took a few months. At first they conditionally approved him and started sending checks. Then they had him have a cognitive screening with their own shrink (who allowed me to stay in the room and was very nice) and they approved him.

All you really need is documentation from your doctors and your IEPs.

I hope it is as positive for you as it was for us.
