I used to believe that bystanders were always objective, neutral and had no personal agenda to side with one of the parties.

that there will come a day when everything finally starts making sense.

that I will grow up just like everyone else.

that a good personal relation with someone is enough for them to like you even if the rest of the crowd hates you for no reason.

that minding my own business is enough to not have any enemies.

I always believed what people told me, especially my family. After all, why would anyone lie? So, I believed that my lips were too big to be able to play the trumpet. Now, I am a white girl, AND at the time, I KNEW that Louis Armstrong played the trumpet. So, why did I believe that??

I also believed that they really killed people in the movies, just to make the battle scenes. I also believed that if I turned on an old 1940's radio, I would get 1940's programming.

I always tended to believe anything negative anybody said about me.

That hard work alone will keep an employer happy and pay the bills.

What things did I used to believe.....

That people were tired of me within seconds of a communication encounter

That if I was helpful and contributed to the well being of another over a long period of time that they wouldn't betray me and return my deeds and good intentions with *ess* h* i * t* and treat me like disposable garbage

I didn't used to believe that grown adults still think like highschoolers

I didn't used to believe that people often care more about power than people

I didn't used to believe that people *want to* judge me

I didn't used to believe that personal *politics* is so prevalent in every day life.

I used to think 'words' mattered a lot, that is 'what you say'.....but they don't matter as much as I thought they did, because in most cases people believe WHAT THEY WANT TO BELIEVE, even a lie.

Being tortured by those in authority would end when I became an adult but it was only the types of torture that changed.

All brilliant posts! I used to believe the same things.

I used to believe that all people (except rare exceptions called "mean") were kind and considerate and cared for everyone else from the genuine bottom of their hearts.

I used to believe that when someone said something, it was always their true belief/opinion/feeling/thought except in very rare occasions.

I used to believe that when someone criticized me, it was out of a pressing concern to improve me for my own good in future.

I used to believe that when someone complained that something wasn't fair, they were concerned with keeping the world a fair place and not with pushing their own interests.

I used to believe that people actually were capable of understanding my issues.

I used to believe that love was only for people who could communicate it in NT ways. Thank God I got over that one.

I used to believe that my family (due to religious belief) actually had real say in how my life should be run, and that their abuse was divinely inspired.

I used to believe that ultimately people would never act against their own as well as others self-interest. But it seems that some people will do things that will not only harm others but harm themselves at the same time, which never made any sense to me until I was thirty-two years of age.

I used to believe:

- That I was always wrong, no matter what.

- That I really was stupid, ret*d, or somehow defective.

- That I deserved to be punished, even if it wasn't my fault.

- That niceness meant interest, interest meant friendship, friendship meant committment, committment meant love, and that "I Love You..." implied "... Forever."

I must say these are all very good posts so far. I've totally felt many of the same things you guys mentioned.

I used to believe that I was mentally ret*d

I used to believe that all people were good people, and that everything anybody else said is 100% fact

I used to believe that when anybody criticized me, it meant I was the dumbest person in the world.

I used to believe that people could understand exactly what I was thinking

I used to believe that all people thought and felt exactly the same as me.

To me, all of this is purely proof that we all see the world completely differently to NTs.....but in a really good way :D

That's well put. Definitely, I used to have the attitude that I was a patient and the people around me were doctors.

I used to believe that how I felt in crowds was just 'shyness' and everyone felt it.
