After procrastinating for 2 week I finally worked up my nerve and phoned the 2 psychologists in my area who do for fee assesments (I can get one that would be covered but there is a waiting list of up to 8 months.

The first person I called, a woman, I really liked. She answered my questions and did so in such a thorough manner that I was able to skip some fo the questions on my list.

The second person I called was a man and I didn't even ask a quarter of my questions. The two questions I did ask he answered in an exagerrated, condescending manner. I finished the conversation by asking his assessment fee ($1500 more then then the woman 8O), thanked him, and said goodbye.

So I'm hoping to have enough saved up in a couple months and then I'll phone and scheduale with the woman.

LosFrida---that is often the hardest step to take---making the first call. After I made my call (via email) I felt a certain relief. Now, I just had to follow through with the appointment. Luckily, there was a therapist only two hours away that has expertise in Asperger's and many other areas. The actual appointment for my diagnosis was most pleasant. He diagnosed me using two criteria; the DSM-IV and another one (Gilliberg?---can't remember, but it was fairly detailed). He told me I met the criteria on both of them. I felt really wonderful and relieved driving home realizing I knew why I was different from other people. I called my wife on the cell phone and told her what we were sure we already knew, "I have Asperger's Syndrome."

Good for you - best of luck, LosFrida!

I totally agree with gilder18 - making the call is the hardest part. After that, you just have to be yourself. I'm glad to hear that you got a good impression of your therapist - trust is important, so I think it's really good that you feel comfortable with her.

Anyway, I hope it goes well for you! :)

Glad you found someone you feel comfortable with. Hope things go well.

I'm just curious if anyone knows of a good psychiatrist/psychologist with experience in Asperger's in the Central New Jersey area? I've wnt online but haven't seen any specialists around me.

Check this list - http://www.aspergers.com/asplist.htm - there are 13 listed for NJ - maybe some are in your area.
