I was driving home tonight and was speeding up to merge onto the freeway (I was near the top of the on ramp) when saw a car in front of me in my lane suddenly stop. I was driving at a safe speed but because he just stopped and I was speeding up I had to slam on the breaks really hard and ended up stopping just in front of him thus avoiding an accident. When I was being taught to drive I was told NEVER just stop on the freeway entry it is so dangerous partially because of what happened tonight with people speeding up to merge and obviously not expecting it. Because it was a hard break hit i skidded slightly and there was a lot of smoke. I was very shaken up by the whole thing having on had my licence 6 months but i know it wasnt my fault. A guy in another car drove past and gave me the thumbs up to say "good job".

Here's a second thumbs up, good for you, you caught those break lights on time!

About 6 months after I first got my license (at 26) I was driving down a somewhat bust street. Up ahead, I noticed a police car parked sideways on the road. I was trying to figure out why he was parked that way.. was there an accident? Unfortunately, I was so focused on figuring him out, that I rear ended a minivan in front of me. Lucky for me, he was available to assess my situation, and guide me in what to do next. The woman I hit was very forgiving, she ended up with a very minor dent which she chose not to claim, I ended up with a write off... as I was driving a neon that apparently couldn't handle the impact while driving at a reduced speed of 35 kms/hr. I am MUCH more focused on what I'm doing now when I drive, and try to keep in mind that anyone driving around me has the potential to catch me off guard.

I'm glad you were able to avoid hitting the other vehicle, even if there's only minor damage, the stress can be overwhelming.

it is nice to hear you got a good person someone who was forgiving afterall we all make mistakes. I am just thankful for me that all was ok in the end but it isnt something i am going to want to have to do again. There are a lot of loonies on the road I have discovered.

i think aspies often wait until later in life to get their licence (I was 28) because ittakes us a lot longer to be ready for it. At 18 there is no way I was ready at 28 I was and I enjoy it except when people do like last night or honk their horn at me.
