BTW, sarcasm is my favorite humor.

I have noticed a trend that makes me think that our mates from Australia are lovers of sarcasm.

I cannot possibly know the global region of every member, but it seems to me that, Aussies have devoloped a fondness for sarcastic humor. In fact, i believe that they have achieved an art form in srcasm.

I for one just love it.

This thread is meant to bring about my theory and to offer me some good, resulting down under humor.

Being put on the spot i wonder if they can deliver the goods.

An aussie discovered sarcasm in 1712. True story. He said something about Britain being "down under". Anyway how could you use a boomerang, call the Didgeridu an instrument and have a national icon in Peter Andre without having an ample sense of humour?

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.

It's belittling, negative and nasty.

I try to minimise my use of it.

The Aussie larrikin and their tongue-in-cheek humour is somewhat of an archtype, and to some extent it rings true amongst the general Australian populace.

Quote:
The term larrikin came to be used affectionately of a person who did not always adhere strictly to polite social conventions; a bit of a stirrer. It was used in political contexts as well—used positively as a term almost of endearment. The negative meanings gradually died out completely in Australia, and the larrikin came to be seen as someone who defied social or political conventions in an interesting and often likeable way.

taken from an article of the origin of the word Larrikin: http://www.anu.edu.au/andc/ozwords/June ... rrikin.htm

(I don't think either of these following links are inappropriate for the General Discussion forum, but I have noted points that some readers may find objectionable just incase the more sensitive among us may want to skip them)

Here is an interesting article on Australian humour. Well worth a read as it explains what you are talking about quite well. http://www.convictcreations.com/culture/comedy.htm
Generally benign, although there is a picture at the top with cartoon nudity, which might offend some people.

Here are some examples of some rather lewd Aussie humour: http://www.akrweb.com/joke/aussie.html
Some of these jokes are fairly dirty, so read at your own discretion.

I enjoy using sarcasm, though I prefer not to use any harmful kinds (unless provoked, and in these cases I can't make my wit work quick enough :? ). But sarcasm is a form of humor I use very frequently. And I'm told I do it well.

It's like a last resort for making someone feel small.

I purposly ignore sarcasm and take what they say literally to piss them off.. you don't need to blow out my candle to make yours glow brighter.

Not all sarcasm is the abrasive bullying kind.

Some sarcasm is quite clever in execution...
