I saw your title and immediately became heated up. I thought, should I read it and risk getting very pissed off at Autism Speaks? I'm glad you took it lightly in your post.

I see it as a bunch of parents who are perfectionists who expect themselves to be perfect in every way, who want their children to be perfect, who abuse their children because they're not perfect, but the thing is that they don't seem to know that nobody's perfect, whether they're handicapped or not, and they also don't know that there are a lot of people with disabilities who do live what they would call the perfect life.

I think they are selfish parents. They want their children to change "for them." They don't want to adapt to letting their kids be themselves.

I thought it was going to be another thing which would make my blood boil, the OP was quite witty and did not make my blood boil.

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

I know basically nothing about Autism Speaks- (this is all still pretty new to me).

Maybe someone can enlighten me?

Autism cure charity. Basically, they use the cutest kids they can find, make them sound as pitiful as they possibly can, rake in the dough, and sponsor research to find either a cure or a prenatal test so they can prevent more of us from being born. Not a single autistic person on their board of directors, of course. Infamous for the "Autism Every Day" video, in which autism is made to seem like the end of everybody's life through staged scenes and an unrealistically negative spin, and one autism mom actually says she thinks about killing her autistic child and herself, but is prevented from doing so because she has another, non-autistic, child.

So, did anyone else get the e-mail to boycott Lindt chocolate for partnering with Autism Speaks?

I used to be very active on Autism Speaks. It was one of the first message boards that I used when I found out my boys had AS. It was okay at first, but then I just got sick of the constant ranting and abuse that certain members heaped on others. Abusive members would be banned, but would then be right back at it under a different name. There was very little oversight when it came to that.

I have also tried out quite a few others, but verbal abuse seems to be pretty common on LOTS of message boards.

There are only two that I visit now: this one and neurointegrity. They are the two nicest and they are non-political. Also, few message boards are maintained as nicely as these two.

I didn't get the email, but I did start a thread in the Autism politics forum, if you want to go give it a bump.

Going after the bunny pushed me over the edge. Now Autism Speaks is my sworn enemy.

I was inclined to just ignore them until then.

I don't know why they call it "autism speaks". They should really call it "people who know people with autism speaking out of their asses".

I couldn't have said this better myself whitetiger. I am so sick of this philosophy of those parents expecting their children to be "perfect." What's perfect? I know of no human being on earth who is perfect.

And I get tired of this one. You tell someone you have Asperger's/autism, and they say, "I would never have dreamed that, you act so...so..." Well how am I supposed to act? I am a human being *%@#! !! So many people (uneducated about autism) just don't seem to get what autism is. There is this notion that autism is something like the Plague. Well...in my opinion...autism is a gift. Autism is my best friend. Autism has made me who I am---and I wouldn't trade that for all the money in the world.

Autism Speaks=Autism
as
PETA= Meat?

I've never been there, but from what I hear, it would be a wasted trip...
