Yes community is more what I had in mind. I wouldn't rush to the donations thing because it's dangerous to involve money on this. But there are so much wonderful things one can do without money just wth willpower.
I Guess the generic question is who would like to be part of an organized community of aspies? Then we should develop from there.
So who would like to be part of an organized community of aspies?
I would
Just a base, non-money community is what we have here at WP. There are opportunities to meet up, along with the support that comes from having others 'around'. My vision was more physical and permanent, involving the community (as a single registered entity) owning properties around the world, which would require some financial base.
For example, 'Integr8' (an example name), would want to have a national centre, and also be able to provide material assistance. Anything from tea and biscuits at the centre to group outings could then be covered by 'Integr8'.
I know that such supports with ATD Fourth World (the poverty charity I work with) have helped them with outreach and have cultivated bonds between all involved. The link here is two way:
1) People in poverty in wealthy countries such as UK, like aspies, can easily become completely cut off and isolated from their local communities. Self esteem is generally low, and people are often unwilling to look for support.
2) Aspies are often prone to poverty, through difficulties acquiring employment long term.
This is why I would take a similar approach that ATD take. AS and poverty link together in many cases, and indeed have similar impacts on the quality of life (in my humble opinion).
They are still very different situations, though, and it would be unwise to attempt to merge the two into one. I just feel that the community and friendship experience at ATD is valuable to me, and I feel it would be valuable to others also
