NLD and delayed speech

Is this possible? I think I spoke very little until age 3 or 4. I know speaking early is common with NLD.

Were u exposed to more than 1 language at the time? If so, that's the reason.

Usually if there's one thing NLDers are good at is language, though...

I'm diagnosed with NLD and I didn't start speaking regularly until I was four. I was capable of speaking before that (I could read at age two), but it wasn't until I went to speech school where I started constantly speaking. I went from nothing to paragraphs. I think a lot of that is because I'm sometimes afraid of trying new things. It's not until I'm extremely sure about it that I'll try it out in fear of embarrassing myself. I think that's exactly what played into this.

That's what I thought. I wrote my thesis on this subject. It happens when BOTH parents speak the same language and that language is different from the local one. The child that is exposed to 2 languages from birth takes time to separate the 2 systems so they start speaking a lot later. Far from being a problem, it's quite a useful way to spend your time as a toddler and give you a good resume from age zero! I'd take pride in it, it's the "problem" of the sophisticated, international, wealthy kids you find in private schools:)

Lightning, it's also the "problem" of the intelligent kids too, who are aware of quality of language.

lol the funny thing is I'm not completely fluent. I can understand basics but I usually don't respond. I don't think I could use it conversationally.

The good thing is you can polish your Indian language, invest in it a couple years, and voila, you have a way to earn money even before/without any other studies.

true. unfortunately it's not Hindi. however it actually has some importance outside of India. Tamil that is.
not to bore you but complicating the matter is my parents are from a different state than the language where this is spoken in so they speak sort of a hybrid. makes it tougher.

NLD ruined my life but also saved it. It's my skill with languages that kept me afloat in the job market in spite of all odds. Having a rare language or two, plus native English, can be a side asset that you can pull on if and when you need it. Today, with the internet, you can work as a translator for someone as far from you as Delhi. I'd certainly not disregard it.

There's Semantic-Pragmatic Disorder (delayed development of verbal ability without the severe social dysfunction of Autism), which is to Autism as NLD is to Asperger's.

Does the NLD syndrome appear in any taxonomies or classification systems of medical or developmental disorders, such as the International Classification of Diseases?


At present, there is no entry in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD; currently in its 10th revision) for the NLD syndrome. Were NLD to be added in some future revision of that classification system, the following is a proposed description of NLD that could be considered for inclusion.

Characteristics Particularly Evident in Younger Children (up to six years)

A. Delays in reaching all developmental milestones, including acquisition of speech, followed by a late but rapid development of speech and some other verbal abilities (particularly of the rote variety), usually to above-average levels.

B. Below normal amount of exploratory behavior. Often, an apparent aversion for any type of exploration of new stimuli/situations.

C. Impaired development of complex psychomotor skills (e.g., climbing, walking).

D. Avoidance of novelty, and preference for highly familiar objects, situations, and information.

E. Preference for receiving information in verbal as opposed to visual format.

F. Relative strengths in simple, stereotyped motor activities (e.g., static steadiness) and in rote verbal memory (e.g., reciting the alphabet).

G. Deficits in perception and attention in both the visual and tactile domains.

H. Notably better auditory-verbal memory than visual or tactile memory.

I. Initial problems in oral-motor praxis, and longstanding, mild difficulties in pronouncing complex, polysyllabic words. Frequently described as "hyperactive" and/or "inattentive."

Why is there so much emphasis on nonverbal in NLD?
Does this mean that persons with NLD have well-developed language?
In what sense is the language of persons with NLD deficient?
How can one characterize the relatively intact and defective linguistic characteristics of persons with NLD?
(4) The language of persons with NLD is usually delayed initially. Although all developmental milestones--including those related to language--tend to be delayed in youngsters with NLD, some language milestones tend to be delayed less than those in other areas (e.g., psychomotor coordination). This has the tendency for drawing parental and other caregivers' attention to the language of the youngster with NLD (unconsciously, perhaps, resolving their cognitive dissonance vis-a-vis the child), with the unfortunate by-product of a tendency to disregard other important dimensions of the child's development (e.g., motor/psychomotor; visual-spatial) that would bolster the notion that the child is significantly delayed or deficient in developmental skills.
