Hi-

I find that if I take formal training in my obsession, it actually ruins it a lot.

I took classes in my obsession and it was still something I loved, but it felt like interference.

I need to do it alone at my own pace.

Does anyone else find that doing it with others or formally waters down the effect that it has on you?

Yes.

Actually, I never recieved any "formal training" in my obsession for black holes, but I did attend a lecture from this Nobel Laureate guy (I forgot his name).

I learned absolutely NOTHING new. He covered no material that I didn't already know. In fact, the material that he did cover was relatively basic. "Black holes have infinite mass blah blah blah. Light cannot escape Black Holes blah blah.."

I was very disappointed, to say the least. I mean, this was a lecture at a freakin' UNIVERSITY, not middle school! :x

Yes.

This is why I liked independent assignments a lot.

It was embarrassing: sometimes I even knew more than the teachers teaching the stuff...

Still, I suppose all that repetition can't have done me any harm...

Yes. Writing was my obsession for a long time, but once I took creative writing as a course, it took all the enjoyment out of it as I was forced to work differently to what I wanted to do.

Same with psychology - I love all the theory, but I tried doing a course in it and I hated it. I found myself disputing a lot of the stuff the tutor said which didn't go down too well!

Now I keep my obsessions for me.

Yes. I very much enjoy writing and drawing. I took a course for art and I ended up hating anything to do with art until the course ended. It made me realise that my dream of having say a job as an illustrator would probably destroy my love for drawing.

As Redplanet said, I now keep my interests separate so I can just enjoy them on my own terms and whenever I have the chance to do them.

Not for me.

My anatomy and psychology classes have only intensified my interests, especially since I have profs who are willing to answer questions--and willing to say "I don't know; here's how you can research that" if necessary.

No, and I never ever would either. I love my obsessions and those who have to voice that they do not can go jump in a lake. I've always had people trying to take my obsessions away or telling me I needed to become intrested in other things. If these people truely cared about me, they would know the obsession is what made me happy and was part of me and would never try to change it unless it was something dangerous like taking drugs or something but what is so bad about meerkats? People probably just found it annoying to hear about meerkats non stop but my parents and siblings did not mind hearing about meerkats all the time and they too are now meerkat experts. Why should I have to change myself for someone who does not matter?

Formal training for my obsessions is a way I spend time enjoying them.
