I work in schools,
and I was quite surprised yesterday when the school I worked at had prominently displayed on their roadside sign: APRIL IS ASD AWARENESS MONTH!! !

"Wow!", I thought, "sounds like fun!" :P

Seriously, I did not know there was such a thing. I suppose it's good. Perhaps such awareness might have caught my aspergerish traits at a younger age and led to some kind of interventions.

So, how will you encourage and celebrate the awareness of ASD's this April?

I will buy a Autism ribbon hairpin or necklace or something, from someone who does NOT donate their proceeds to Autism Speaks, and wear it proudly. :D

I will promote it by sulking quietly in the back of the classroom as is my custom. But with pride!

I did, and I'm promoting it by making 30 YouTube videos in 30 days to raise autism awareness. I've already made 13. I'll make the rest through the month of April and launch video 1 tomorrow.

Don't take life so seriously. It isn't permanent!

I'm thinking of writing a speech about what it's like to have Asperger's Syndrome, and recite it in the courtyard of my university's campus to raise awareness. It's been done before with Black History month and Women's Rights, but I'm wondering if I'll have the time to do so.

I knew because this time last year CNN dedicated an entire week of primetime to it - Jenny (pthooey!)McCarthy was on Larry King endlessly spewing that BS about vaccines causing autism. On the other hand, Anderson Cooper on 360 did a great story about Amanda Baggs, the autistic girl who regularly posts awareness videos to YouTube - she is nonverbal, but communicates perfectly well through her keyboard.

One thing I will NOT be doing to promote awareness is telling NTs "We're just like you," because if you promote that message, you will never be taken seriously as someone who has a real (if invisible) handicap.
