With an AS character in both these BBC drama's ( All the small things, Waterloo Road).

Do you think this is due to more awareness or passing fad?

I don't watch either of these shows, but I would guess it's probably an increase in awareness. Also as more people are diagnosed, the chances must be higher that one of the writers knows someone who is AS. Or indeed, that someone involved in the making of the shows is themselves autistic.

I'd also guess that Asperger's is something which could be written into a drama with the potential for some kind of plot development, perhaps something about relationships or communications.

Sorry, I'm not very clear today.

Hey, could it just simply be because people with Asperger's are INTERESTING? COMPLEX? Make for really great shows? We've got a comedy in the U.S. called "Big Brain Theory" and there's a character on that who definitely would be a diagnosable Asperger's person. His "quirks" are hilarious, but he also brings up a lot of interesting conflict -- and the writers are smart and do not make him one-dimensional. The best thing that they do is contrast him with the sexy, neuro-typical blonde who lives in the same apt. building -- the plots that come up are wonderful, whether they are funny or somewhat serious.

That show is on E4 here and, although I thought it looked crap from the ads, I watched a episode of it once and actually really liked it.

There does seem to be more AS characters on TV at the moment, but they all seem a bit stereotypical, and always seem to be stressed out.
I think there should be more comedy featuring an AS character, a bit like big bang theory only instead of people just guessing they're aspie it's official in the programme.

I don't watch either of them shows but there is a show here in NZ (shortland street) that currently has a character on it with AS. It was only a matter of time before they put one on there because a lot of other countries have in their shows.
I think it's all about trying to spread awareness but it seems like they are doing it the wrong way. The characters are exactly like the stereotypes of people with AS & I think it's making the public think that everyone with AS must be a mathematical genius...at least, that's probably what most of NZ are thinking.

OMG, I used to watch that here in the UK years ago!

sorry.. I don't mean to be a threat killer. :-s

I agree with whoever said these characters on TV seem very steryotypical. I was watching waterloo road last week and the girl is very steriotypical... but I saw the bit where she ran out of school to the road... that's exactly what I did once.
