I walk fast. I call it the "Berkeley Shuffle" because I first noticed it when I was selling microdots on Telegraph Ave. I continued the 'purpose driven walk' thoughout my life, though. Just the other day the bus driver mentioned to me (he must have watched me walk across the cross walk and over to the bus in the bay at the transit center, cause I walked right in front of him) "there is a woman on a mission" I hoped he didn't see I walked just as fast when I passed onto my seat on the bus and it took 7 more minutes before we left.
From where my eyes are ( I am 5'6') it seems like everything is 'too far' to walk slow to get there. Anyway, if you are a single woman, out walking on the sidewalks of town or country, you want to look like you have a purpose, you have places to go and things to do, and anyone that might want to hassle, rob, harass, will pick on a easier target. So it is protection, as well.
anyway, why would anyone want to walk slow? (I agree, S_G!)
