I've always had Special Interests but when I was in high school, I never thought anything of it. It was never one of the reasons why I felt different because I was interested in Astronomy and Astronomy was reasonably (nerdy) mainstream. What I didn't really notice was that the level of interest and enthusiasm I had for my interest was abnormal and WAY OVER THE TOP. I had no one to compare myself with so I didn't realise that spending that much time and energy researching and learning about my interest was abnormal.

But now I'm 47 - I've been interested in Myna birds for the past 2 years and I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHY!! Even I can see it's weird! All I know is I'm besotted with them and I have NO IDEA why! It's almost like a love spell! If I'd have formed an interest in Myna birds back then, well maybe I would have known something wasn't quite right but I had Astronomy and that was normal.

I've always known I don't belong here but my interest in Astronomy wasn't part of it. As it turns out, it was a massive part of it! Special Interests!
