Thanks to everyone on Wrong Planet who responded to my thread on idioms. This is my video, based on my own problems and yours.

Thanks! I had fun with this one. I started a thread on it here about 2 weeks ago and put my favorites in the video from the people who posted.

I loved your video! I'm like any typical Aspie who has difficulties understanding figures of speech/metophors, especially the really stupid illogical ones! What I do understand I make jokes out of and am quite good at it! I will post some soon when I have time to. :D

Above is a great link that explains the origins of idioms. They are fascinating if you return to their etymology and you gain a great historical perspective. These idioms did not just fall from the sky, but they originated out of a culture from which we sprang.

Moronic? Not quite. It is moronic to dismiss idioms as useless when they are such a fascinating and essential part of our language and culture. I don't believe for a second a person with Asperger Sydrome would be so stiff as to not want to do some research in order to determine the origins of idioms.

Some of the greatest thinkers of our time used adages and idioms to sum up abstract ideas in order to simplify and explain a human flaw or tendancy.

Return to classics in literature and many of our idiomatic expressions come from these works in the guise of conceits.

It is too late. We have formed an opinion and it is embedded in our subconsciounsness.
I'm sure a post here a post there does not a person make.

Is it unusual to have AS and have no trouble with idioms, metaphors, or sarcasm? I don't have trouble with any of the three.

No, it's possible. There are 8 criteria for AS. You only need to meet 3 of them and not understanding idioms, sarcasm or metaphors isn't even on the list.

I understand metaphors well!

I sometimes wonder what proportion of those with AS have that or other traits. I do, however, sometimes get on people's cases for not using words in an accurate sense. This is definitely a trait of Asperger's.

Yea. Not all idioms are metaphors. Metaphors are usually quite intuitive for me but idioms often don't make a whole lot of sense.

I think NT's learn idioms based on recognizing the context in which they are used. My problem is that I always over-focus on the absurd, nonsensical images that most idioms create in my mind. It's so distracting that I completely fail to remember the context in which the phrase came up. If you don't pay close attention to the context you'll never recall their meaning.

I have the same kinds of problems! At times confusing, distracting, and amusing to inspire me to make jokes out of them! :D
