Recently I read something from a mother that is treating her Aspie son with risperidone and fluoxetine.

What do you think of that? Do you think that makes any sense, or is "junk science"?

junk science, i was stuck on both and did nothing but ruin my physical and mental health. AS is a neurodevelopemental syndrom not a mental condition, both drugs have been show to intergere with brain developement.

The former is approved for treating behavioural problems in ASDs as far as I know. Apart from that, it'd probably cut down on standing anxiety, as well as anxiety caused by situations and routine disruptions. It's a bandaid, so to speak.

They also speculate that it helps with some core areas of ASDs, i.e., social withdrawal.

I don't know what the second one is, but if it's a SSRI, they tend to prescribe that for anxiety.

No studies have been ever show that drugs help with autism spectrum disorders. Shame that people let their kids be guinea pigs for the pharmacuetical industry. The effects of those drugs just don't wear off once the kid stops taking them either, some of the side effects can do permanent damage to the brain and body.

Depends really. Some autistic kids are/were on risperidone and I know they turned more lf while on them.

A cursory glance at the side effects and their prevalence would suggest this is a dangerous idea, especially given that there's no evidence that these drugs alleviate AS in the slightest:

As they're (presumably) not available without a prescription, I'm amazed the lady found anybody to prescribe them. What is the world coming to?

The kid is being followed by a psychiatrist. Probably the drugs were prescribed by him.

Psychiatrist just want to push drugs. Realize that they are part of a system, where just like anyplace else, it's "you scratch my back I'll scratch yours." Clinical psychiatry and drug companies are both part of the same system, a system that advocates for it's own survival.

Also, if it wasn't for pushing drugs, psychiatrists would be out of a job.

A psychiatrist once told me that if you have 2 psychotic breaks in your lifetime, you have to be on anti-psychotics for the rest of your life. It doesn't matter if you get better.

may I point something out? Aspergers never presents alone, I myself have aspergers with ADHD and OCD tendencies. I take Luvox, an SSRI for my OCD symptomns, so maybe that is why it is prescribed?

I was diagnosed with AS in 2007 and I was put on Risperidone and Fluoxetine, they didn't work very well.
Some people find Atomoxetine (Straterra) helpful for ADD.

Part of the clinical description of AS is that some of it's behaviors mimic OCD - but as an Aspie living with an OCD partner I can tell you, while there are sometimes similarities in the behaviors, the psychological motivations are very different. Its possible you are being medicated for a condition you do not actually have.

On topic, I personally feel that it's one thing to treat brain and body with naturally occurring substances that have evolved along with everything else on the planet, but when you start cooking up batches of designer substances, that's not something I want to pour into my body or brain willy-nilly. Look at the lists of side effects at the end of any pharmaceutical product television commercial - and those are just the ones they discovered during trials that the FDA insisted they disclose! It's one thing to use as a last resort, but in general I feel it's akin to repairing a spider web with a monkey wrench.

I like the commercials that say "side effects may include death"

I believe the philosphy governing the prescribing of dangerous drugs is supposed to be balance of risk - i.e. the dangers of not taking tablets versus the dangers of taking them. I think we could make a more informed decision if we knew more about what state this child was in before the pharmacological intervention. Judging by the prevalence and severity of the known side effects of those two substances, it would have to have been a pretty dire situation, to justify what they've done. What's the source of this story?

If and when I get DXed for Aspergers, it'll be interesting to see whether any comorbid conditions come up, and if so, whether or not drugs are advocated, and how keen the medics are to get me on them. Having got to the age of 56 without a single episode of irrational violence or self-harm, not even a minor meltdown to my credit, I suppose I'd have a strong case to maintain that I'm safer off meds than on them. If they push the issue without some convincing arguments, I guess I'll have to decide whether to tell them where to shove their pills, or whether to just pretend to comply.

No.

That would be as effective as treating color blindness with these meds. How well would that work.

Now....there are other disorders - such as major depression, often as a result of AS - which would benefit from medications.

But not AS.
