For those of you guys who have difficulty recognizing faces (prosopagnosia being the psychobable term), do you find that it gets worse when you're wearing sunglasses? I don't know why, but it seems to for me. ((I mamanged to kind of make a new acquaintence out of a resulting false positive once, though, so it's not all bad. :P))

I wear sunglasses because I'm very sensitive to bright lights (I.e. I squint 24/7). But I don't have trouble recognizing faces. I'm always the guy who recognizes actors and all of the shows/movies they've been in.

My sunglasses give everything a yellow tinge.. And it usually makes it easier to understand people's faces because I can stare at some part of their face without them going "why are you starting at me". I dunno!

Actually, that's kinda funny. I have the complete opposite of Prosopagnosia and actually am better than most people at recognizing a faces, even if the person's changed a lot. I'm also just as good at recognizing voices.

Usually the only time to show this off in excess is while watching tv and I can quickly bring up what other show such-and-such had been in, and everyone else is baffled how I recognized them in the first place.

Or I'll say things like "That's Jamie Lee Curtis doing the voice-over for the orange juice commercial." (This is a real example.)

As for sunglasses, I rarely wear them because I have glasses and those clip-overs look so stupid and I don't have the $$$ for prescription sunglasses. :?

Either way, that's a "no" to both.

I have prosopagnosia whether or not I'm wearing sunglasses, it's difficult to say if it gets worse - I can't say I've had any more complaints of "ignoring" people in the Summer than in Winter time!

What would be the theory behind it getting worse with shades?

Just that it seems to happen with me but I may be (probably am) imagining things.

I haven't tried on sun glasses for years so I cannot say whether it makes my facial blindness worse, but,if are looking for a theory, perhaps it is because shades are changing the way the person usually sees things,I mean...the person is used to seeing another with normal daylight shade, but when shades are put on,it changes that, and the person is not recognised?
Kind of like the way the person is not recognised when they change their clothing?

I don't have prosopagnosia and recognize just about everyone. But that doesn't mean I don't still ignore them.

Example: If I see someone I "used" to know, I never go up to them unless they recognize me and approach. They rarely do. So it's all good. Unless I've known a person VERY well and for years and years, or a person who is still in my life, I won't go up and say hi.

One of the great things about this forum is to learn that others have the same characteristics. In a way it helps to not just feel out there by yourself. I experience the same reaction when I see someone that I know (or knew and still know). I don't mean anything by it but I won't initiate conversation.

Wearing coloured lenses (red or blue) is supposed to help with certain ASD issues.

I hate sunglasses... but being sensitive to light makes it tough. I can't stand wearing them while talking to others, and if the other is wearing sunglasses any eye contact, hard to begin with, becomes downright impossible.

I think I only have trouble with faces because I don't look at them often...

p.s. those indoor sunglass wearers should be drawn and quartered! I pretty much have to face away from them totally.

LOL! Now that's another matter entirely. Selective prosopagnosia?
