Hey, guys.

Well, I know a lot of people here are diagnosed with Asperger's or autism, so I'm assuming you guys know a lot about it.

To be honest, I myself am not even sure if I have Asperger's, or even autism in general. The thing that makes me unbelieve that I do, is the fact that I'm very sociable, got a very good sense of humor (I've read that autistic people have a very dry sense of humor), have no problem looking people in the eye, and I don't have any problem with people touching me (unless you count my mother giving me a kiss in public. But that's another story).

However, the thing that makes me think I AM autistic, is that I can obsess over things sort of easily, once it was Warthogs, then it was ancient Mesoamerica, and I just got off a new one, music (but I've always liked it.) And now, I don't have one, except for a few, like Soccer and comedy, but they seem more like entertainment purposes rather than obsessions. And I also sometimes hand-flail, and sometimes, when I'm excited, I feel the need to hand-flap, although I've stopped it only recently, about maybe a year and a half ago.

So, maybe, to some degree, I am. I've scored pretty averagely on autism online tests, like on the last one I took, I got a 20.

0-10 - low
11-22 - average
23-31 - above average
32 -50 - very high
50 - maximum.

Doesn't like eye contact? Are you sure you're not just Asian?

It's really hard to say. It doesn't sound like you exhibit many of the traits, but who's to say you aren't on the spectrum just a little?

Let me ask you... does it really matter?

I'd say no. As much as i've looked into autism, you don't seem to describe much of the traits. The only sure way to find out now is to contact a professional.

But as fiddlerpianist said, does it really matter?

Well, to all of you saying if it "really matters", to me, it does.

No, I'm not saying I'd hate to be an aspie, but I love myself a lot, and I'm curious to know if I DO have this "gift". So, seeing as you guys all know and are (mostly) diagnosed with it, I'd figure you'd know, or at least give me a good judgement.

Better online quiz: http://www.rdos.net/eng/Aspie-quiz.php

But basically if you are falling into the normal range (iirc, on that quiz dead normal is at 18), then you probably don't have it. You need to be aware of the whole self-fufilling prophecy thing.

Also, whatever traits you do have, have they ever interfered with your life.

It does matter, and if anyone tells you it doesn't, they're either lying to you or deluding themselves.

It is hard to make a judgment without knowing you personally, and from very limited information. You know yourself better than anyone, so my advice is to borrow a book on AS (preferably one with tests/questionnaires in it) and read it. You'll know if it's you.

What do you mean when you say you are very sociable?

If you can describe your understanding of and role in social situations it may provide you with a better idea of how you relate to autism.

Those things you say make you not believe you have asperger's, I'm like that too. I'm diagnosed. Okay, maybe I had more trouble with socializing and eye contact when I was first diagnosed but we can adapt quite well by age 16 in many mild cases like me and maybe you.

It matters in the context of providing insight into who you are, absolutely. Were there a lot of little things in your childhood that hitherto went unexplained or were explained in terms of you being "gifted," yet fit the AS symptom list? Do you to this day have to consciously walk through social situations, especially involving more than one person?

What doesn't matter is what you have (it's not like having a cold). It also doesn't matter what we say we think you have, or even what a professional diagnoses you with. It's ultimately about the insight you may gain about yourself by talking with us here.

Do you want to know if we think a professional would diagnose you with AS, or do you just want to know if we think you're "on the spectrum"?

happypuff, thanks for that quiz.

I got a "neurotypical" on it, which means I'm normal. Cool. So, according to all these quizzes, I'm normal.
