Hi there

I have only recently found out about mild autism/HFA & AS and after reading as many books as I could find either about Autism or written by people who have AS or are on the Autistic Spectrum...I think I am now ready to talk to a psychologist about this and look at getting a formal diagnosis. Previously I've been diagnosed with depression/anxiety etc...and last year I was seeing a psychologist that was quite helpful, but I don't know if he has any experience in diagnosising autistic behaviours so not sure there is much point talking to him about it if he doesn't know what to look for or how to advise me.

My questions are:

Do I need to see a psychologist who specialises in Autism/AS or can any psychologist make a diagnosis?

Can anyone recommend a good clinic/psychologist in Perth (Australia) that would be able to diagnose an adult?

Hi, in Australia it's best to get diagnosed by a psychiatrist. I got diagnosed by a psychologist and even though the APS says she was qualified to diagnose me it means jack to my doctor.

You can look up an ASD specialist here:

Thanks for the advice! I'm guessing I would probably need a referral to a psychologist, so I might start with talking to my doctor about it...

I know with mental illness in Australia you can get rebates so that going to see a psychologist is cheaper, is it similar if you are diagnosed with autism/AS?

I'm not sure. I'm on Medicare and healthcare so I have had the rebate.

Contact the Perth Autism Ass'n (or whatever it's called), they should have a list of professionals who can dx it. The trouble I had when I lived in Perth was that very few will dx adults, they tend to do kids mainly.
