If aspieness was a norm and NTs had to be treated and you worked as a therapist, what kind of therapy/interventions would you use? how would you treat them? at what age?

A seductive ploy to turn adults with autism and Asperger's into "Curbies," precisely that which is they fight against ? Hmmm.

Well, I don't think their condition can be cured, but I think the harmful co-morbid aspects can be managed.

I could come up with a list of other things, but the main thing is helping them to think logically about the decisions they make. They should understand that there is room for some emotional choices -- compassion demands that, for example -- but that they should always ask themselves when tempted to act: "Am I doing this because it is the best or the right thing, or am I doing it simply because other people are doing it?"

They should be particularly aware of their tendency to do illogical things when in crowds, and could be assisted by means of cartooning and group exercises to resist the tendency to conform for no reason -- to distinguish between good co-operation and bad co-operation, that is.

I would start the training at the same age as you teach a toddler not to put his finger into a candle, but with adapted interventions to suit the age.

PS:

I would also help them to distinguish between games and real fights, and to understand that loyalty towards one's own team does not mean hatred of opponents. NT sports fans ofen see their own teams as good and the opponents as enemies, insulting them without consideration of their merit as sportmen.

Children will play games in which they will be taught to be sportsmanlike and to have respect for the skills of opponents and to show due admiration.

In fact, I would get other people who suffer from the same syndrome to teach this, I would not leave the training solely to Aspies, because I feel that they should learn to help themselves and others within their neurotype. Many of them who are involved in one-to-one competitive sports such as martial arts have an advanced understanding of respect for opponents, and even though their sport involves fighting, it is not fighting due to enmity. These people will lecture to sportsmen and fans of team sports such as rugby and soccer and encourage them to watch match replays in which they can see how good some of the opposing teams are.

They will have to learn to project their feelings: "Just as you are happy when your team wins because they represent your community/country/whatever, so the other guys are also happy when their team wins. Therefore, if your team does not win, you need not be sad, because you can see how happy the other people are, and rejoice with them in your heart, and congratulate them. Also, your team can learn some tactics which they can apply next time."

They will also learn to distinguish between sporting prowess and goodness as a human being, so that they do not automatically make role-models of people simply because they are famous for sporting achievements.

If they were a young age, they could be randomly punched in the face for no apparent reason as to encourage developing borderline pathology and black and white thinking. We could also use a novel cocktail of drugs, to completely nuke *cough* medicate the part of their brain that deals with emotions. We could attach devices to them, that give them a little electric shock whenever they stop stimming for 5 seconds or more. And lastly we could teach them from a young age that everytime they express an emotion (or imagine someone elses emotions), that baby jesus cries and they will goto hell.

Do you propose the "little electric shock" be applied to their brains or their bare feet ? The reviewing committee wants to know.

The reviewing committee believes the proposal set forth by Alphabetania is somewhat more through and potentially better documented, and requests to hear receive additional information, materials, and documentation in support of the proposal.

I think, that in the case of AS majority NT should be taught to express their thoughts and emotions explicitly and not to rely too much on social intuition, non-verbal signs, empathy and theory of mind. But some abilities of NT in AS society may be talents (just as some AS abilities may help them in science work in NT society).

I would teach them a little thing called EMPATHY.

I'd teach them that catering to every tiny minority doesn't work. 8)

I think we should try to cure their lack of logical thinking. Teach them some literality, eg.

Maybe it has been done by another name. I wonder if the Mysticism/Enlightenment/Illumination practices (of which I know very little) are an attempt to change the NT mind into another way of thinking. That new way of thinking could be closer to the Aspie/Austism mind.

Eg from wiki "The term '"mysticism'" is used to refer to beliefs and practices which go beyond the liturgical and devotional forms of worship of mainstream faith, often by seeking out inner or esoteric meanings of conventional religious doctrine, and by engaging in spiritual practices such a breathing practices, prayer, contemplation and meditation, along with chanting and other activities designed to heighten spiritual awareness. For example, Kabbalah (based in Judaism) seeks out deeper interpretations of the Torah, and conducts spiritual practices based in song, dance, prayer and talmudic study, accordingly. Sufism (in Islam) extends and amplifies the teachings of the Quran in the spirit of universal love, most famously through their devotional musicians dancing Zhikrs and singing Qawwalis."

They would need lessons in honesty such as how to tell the truth in a way that preserves the other person's feelings if possible but but without lying. All white lies are to be exposed as lies, there is no difference between white and black lies.
eg.
Does this dress make me look fat? I prefer that gorgeous blue one you wore last week.
Did you hear what she said to him? I'd rather you didn't break confidentiality.

It is important that these unfortunate children are discovered at as young an age as possible so the effect of their illnes will impair their lives minimally.
They will need to be taught not to engage in games of make believe and pretense, as it is harmful to their development. Their dependence upon others is another issue that must be addressed. It seems that they are incapable of doing things and coming up with ideas and thoughts without others to influence and accept the process. It may indicate seperation anxiety. Co-morbid conditions are often seen in these cases.
Their tendency to grimace, make eye contact and wave their arms (which some experts now believe to be a "non-verbal" form of communication) indicates a severe arrested development. The neurotypical children easily intimidate their normal peers with this atavistic behaviour.
Other things that will cause problems is their tendency to fib, their inability to focus, their belief that appearances matter and their competitiveness.
Even with help from an early age it is clear that these individuals will remain ineffective in society as they never fully recover the need for wasting time stating the obvious and heckle their coworkers with meaningless comments.

Fortunately we now have medications that will help reduce some of these symptoms and it is our hope to find a cure for this scourge. Although we have yet to find all the genes involved, it is reasonable to assume that neurotypicality will be eradicated within our lifetime.

The stress a family with a neurotypical child experiences is formidable. Relief homes can help them out but it is hard to find individuals capable of dealing with these low functioning children.

Neurotypicality speaks: It is time to listen.

NT's could be improved imo, not cured. They could do well with a few aspie traits but not all. I wouldn't want a world full of people who didn't care how they look. I already live in Sweden where jeans and jogging shoes are high fashion... ugh...
