THEY:

open your mail
tell you not to smoke
listen to your cell phone
tell you how much of your earnings you may keep
spend your tax on a foolishly run war
tell you the gun you can own
close your dirt roads
have a lot of regulatory laws
can monitor your bank account
own your money (you only license it) by way of the federal reserve
use your tax to support dictators
place unelcted bureaucrats in positions to oversee your life
tell you not to smoke weed
forceably medicate you

We have a lot more Eagles then we need. At least our money looks cooler now.

Excuse me while I flee to Iceland.

Why do think I'm applying for refuge status in a Scandinavian nation?!

Nothing to worry about, in 2008 the country will be privatized in a leveraged buyout by Haliburton, who will take it private.

Keep paying attention to the next celebriity election. Gore is having Elvis's baby!

Oil has made such profits on this war that they have to buy something, and Congress is cheap. Together they only make $50 million a year, what would they do for another $100 million? Oil was $13 then $70, and the people did it for them. They went from smoking Subarus, to mainlineing SUVs.

I am now unpatriotic, I support the Constitution.

Now they gather private military contractors, Haliburton has the largest corporate army on earth.

The government assets they have no use for will pay off the christian right. Mandatory National Bible Study is the answer. Pass their tests or be sent to Bible Camp.

I am building a boat to flee to Haiti.

Soviet America sounds like my ideal holiday destination.
I would love to live in a totalitarian state ruled by the undeniable logic and supremacy of science and socialism.

In Soviet America, no one in the government can be held accountable for anything.

Excuse me while I flee to Iceland.

Barring the whaling, Iceland would be a good choice. I would like to learn the language. It is apparently closer to Old Norse than Norwegian (bokmal or Nyorsk) Swedish or Danish. Finnish is completely unrelated, barring loanwords: it is amongst the few surviving European languages not a member of the Indo-European super-family, whereas the other Scandinavian tongues belong to the Teutonic/Germanic branch of the Indo-European family. Basque is another, though it is not related to Finnish or any other surviving language. Sorry about this diversion. Tolkien knew Icelandic, Finnish, Welsh, Old Norse, Spanish and of course Latin and Greek. He also invented languages. I realise that you detest Tolkien, Flagg, and hope that you do not mind this further diversion even more.

To return to the thread topic - the United States of America and my own nation Australia may be taking some steps that give cause for grave concern, but I am not sure how plausible talk of Fascism is - it's actually rather insulting to anyone who has suffered under a Fascist regime. Still at the time (in Nazi germany or Fascist Italy)people may not have realised how their freedom was being erroded either.
