F - EMD's F-Unit, the diesel which conquered steam in the US,
https://www.wearerailfans.com/c/article ... ous-diesel

Quote:
The Electro-Motive “F-unit”: Born in the autumn of 1939, it would be produced, in eight different models, until 1960 and would number more than 7,500 strong. More than any other locomotive, it would be the force that “dieselized” the railroads of North America. Constructed by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors at La Grange, Illinois and by General Motors Diesel at London, Ontario, Canada, fabulous F-units would serve in every corner of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and elsewhere around the globe.

Designed to haul tonnage (“F” stood for “freight”), the Electro-Motive F-unit proved equally adept at conveying passengers, and could be found on the point of many of North America’s greatest passenger trains, such as the Super Chief, Empire Builder, California Zephyr, and Canadian.

Great Western Railway

The original one of course, associated first and foremost with the legendary 19th Century British engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Lines ran from London Paddington station to places like Bristol, South Wales, Swindon, Exeter, etc.

When the system was nationalized in the late 1940s, it was known as the 'Western Region'.

Are you sure it is South America? The Alaska Railroad seems to think the Hurricane Turn is their train;

I - Intercity 125, aka HST (the High Speed Train).

Introduced in the UK in 1976 on services between London Paddington and Bristol/South Wales, was the fastest diesel service in the world at the time, and the second fastest train overall behind the Japanese Shinkansen 'Bullet Train'. I travelled on one of these from Paddington to Bristol in June 1977, and it completed the first 77 miles to Swindon in 45 minutes. I wonder how many of the trains running in this country can match that even today.
